General Facts Fire Emblem is a game franchise developed by Intelligent Systems and published by Nintendo; its style of gameplay has directly inspired multiple gaming franchises like Final Fantasy, Disgaea, and Valkyria Chronicles. As of 2020, there have been sixteen main series Fire Emblem games, three of which have been remakes. Fire Emblem has been one of the few critically-acclaimed game series with wide character rosters to include the ‘permadeath’ feature whereby characters become unplayable after their death in-game. The franchise was never intended to sell outside of Japan – only demand from potential Western players convinced Nintendo to consider the move.
