Description

Every year graduating engineers are told that they are destined for success. But what are the habits and behaviours that actually lead to success? In What I did not learn at IIT, Rajeev Agarwal, the Founder and CEO of MAQ Software, has distilled decades of life experience into one accessible and informative guide. In simple language, he explains the success techniques he applied and what worked for him. Encouraging graduates to look at their careers over a 40-year span, Rajeev explains that successful people choose to be passionate about every job they have. Using a skillful combination of personal stories and checklists, What I did not learn at IIT provides students-young and old-with a roadmap for success.

With many industries suffering from overcapacity, companies in India still have the opportunity to lead the IT services sector. One of the ways to grow a company is to increase the effectiveness of team members. As a Gazelles Growth company, MAQ Software has implemented some of the key growth techniques explained in the book. I highly recommend this book to industry leaders to share with their teams to grow their businesses.

Foreword
W hen Rajeev, who first worked at Microsoft for many years before becoming a successful entrepreneur, gave me an early draft of this book for input and feedback, the first thing that struck me was Rajeev s passion for wanting to share what he has learned in his career, above and beyond what educational institutions teach you-in his case, IIT; in my case, College of Engineering, Guindy, Anna University.
It got me thinking about what I have learned over the course of my nearly 25-year career since I started at Microsoft-the company I joined directly after graduate school. If I have to summarize the top 3 things that I have learned, they are these:
a)
Follow your heart -Do what you have passion for as that s when you will strive to do your very best and have the kind of impact that you can and want to have.
b)
Do your very best -No matter what your current role is, strive to do your best as that will take you places that you never dreamt of or imagined.
c)
Have relentless curiosity and excitement for learning -That s the best way for you to stay ahead and reach your full potential.
In some sense, like a mirror is a true external reflection of you, what you hold near and dear in terms of values and what you have learned reflects in what you look for in others. At Microsoft, we hire thousands of new employees every year into many kinds of roles and at many levels of seniority. Hiring the best and brightest is critical for Microsoft, and something I am passionate about. Across all the roles at Microsoft, I ve noticed that people who exhibit these three ideas tend to be successful. Those who follow their heart have a passion and excitement about their work that energizes their team, their partners, and their customers. Those who strive to do the best they can in their role deliver outstanding results which enable their team to succeed. And those who have a relentless curiosity and excitement for learning are able to adapt to the fast pace of change in the corporate world, particularly in the technology industry. I m always excited to meet people who are passionate, hard-working, and excited to learn.
One of the most rewarding parts of my job running the Developer Division at Microsoft is to have been a sponsor for the Microsoft Imagine Cup for the last 10 years. The Imagine Cup is the world s premier student technology competition, and has given more than 1.65 million students from across the world the opportunity to learn and create using the most exciting new technologies in the industry. Anyone who knows me understands how passionate I am about encouraging student interest in science and technology, especially, of course, in the Computer Sciences.
Spending time working with students at the Imagine Cup provides a real perspective on the kinds of challenges and opportunities that students face as they transition from campus to the workforce, a theme which Rajeev covers in detail throughout this book. For many of the students, participating in the Imagine Cup is their first experience with new kinds of experiences that the workplace offers; managing time effectively, the importance of teamwork, and a focus on results. This is also their first opportunity to understand what it means to channelize their creativity, energy, and ideas into solutions that can solve real problems for a large number of people around the world. The Imagine Cup has been a great opportunity for me to work with young people who are passionate, excited to learn, curious, and self-starters, and have an amazing work ethic. Seeing these qualities in young people just getting started in technology is exciting. I truly believe it s the dreams and aspirations of these amazing students that will guide each to great success in the near future, and the rest of us confidently into the next phase of technology. As I always say, today s students are tomorrow s leaders. They are going to be running the next generation of businesses, states, and countries.
In this book Rajeev shares his experiences transitioning from IIT to success in the business world. Some of these are experiences I ve seen in my own path from university to industry. Others are things I see students experience for the first time at the Imagine Cup e
