ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Shalinni Chakrabarty was born in the religious city of Varanasi, U.P., India. Inspired by her father that food should never be wasted as many more don’t get the same every day, she started pondering ways and means by which common food items can help the poor and destitute families to fight diseases. At very young age when most children think of career and other general issues, Shalini used to think about eradication of food and health related problems of the world. After completing her schooling, she went to study Nutrition from renowned Lady Irwin College of Delhi University. But she wanted to get the feel of rural India, which is still agri based and where medicines means a M.B.B.S. doctor in some 10 sq kilometers range, Census might say something else. She did her Masters in Nutrition and Dietetics from Allahabad Agricultural University where she turned out to be a Gold Medalist. Her journey to change began with Prayas - NGO for neglected children, where she used to make diet plans with maximum nutrients and cheapest food. She then started working as a Nutritionist in Saaol Heart Centre, Delhi which aimed at preventing and curing Heart Diseases through changing Food and Lifestyle habits. Following which she was with Sitaram Bhartia Institute of Science and Research, Delhi where she worked as Nutritionist & Diabetes Educator to counsel patients regarding all chronic ailments in the body and most importantly Diabetes. Her current assignment is with Indian coalition for Control of Iodine Deficiency Disorders, Indian subsidiary of an International NGO headquartered in All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi. INTRODUCTION
The average hearts beats almost 90,000 times per day. With each beat, the heart expels blood into the arteries — strong, muscular tubes that carry blood to all parts of the body, branching into smaller and smaller tubes along the way.
When the heart beats, it generates force, which is transferred to the blood. As blood leaves the heart, it carries this force with it into the arteries. This force pushes on the walls of the arteries and the arteries push back, helping to propel the blood forward into the body.
This force also causes pressure within the arteries, which is called blood pressure. Blood pressure measurements consist of two numbers. The systolic pressure is measured while the heart is contracting, and is the larger of the two numbers. The diastolic pressure is measured while the heart is relaxing, and is smaller than the systolic pressure. These two pressures are written together, like this: 120/80 mmHg (millimeters of mercury), and pronounced “120 over 80.” Both the systolic and diastolic blood pressures are important determinants of cardiovascular risk, so both are used in evaluating overall blood pressure status.
When measured as an average value over a long period of time (weeks to months), the blood pressure is an important value that directly affects how likely you are to have a heart attack suffer a stroke develop other problems, like kidney failure
While blood pressure by itself cannot say that you definitely will, or will not, suffer any of these ailments, a very large body of scientific research has shown that high blood pressure (also known as hypertension) is a strong risk factor for developing a wide range of medical problems.

For a long time, normal blood pressure was defined as 120/80 (systolic / diastolic). Recently, the American Heart Association changed the definition of normal blood pressure to “Less than 120 / Less than 80.”

1 UNDERSTANDING HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE
High blood pressure increases your chance (or risk) for getting heart disease and/or kidney disease, and for having a stroke. It is especially dangerous because it often has no warning signs or symptoms. Regardless of race, age, or gender, anyone can develop high blood pressure. It is estimated that one in every four American adults has high blood pressure. Once high blood pressure develops, it usually lasts a lifetime. You can prevent and control high blood pressure by taking some precautions.
In this chapter, you will learn more about what high blood pressure is and what it does inside the body.

What is High Blood Pressure?
Blood pressure is the force of blood against the walls of arteries. Blood pressure rises and falls during the day. When blood pressure stays elevated over time, it is called high blood pressure.
The medical term for high blood pressure is hypertension . High blood pressure is dangerous because it makes the heart work too hard and contributes to atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries). It increases the risk of heart disease a
