Introduction
Science. Technology. So many of us take it for granted. But have you ever thought what it has taken to put this e-reader into your hands? How many giants standing on the shoulders of other giants were required just to get to this stage of human existence?
In fact, the electronic book reader is a wonderful invention. But we can’t say it is truly revolutionary. After all, the experience isn’t so difference from holding a physical, paper-based book in your hands, and therefore your tablet isn’t going to go down in history as the most amazing invention ever.
So what have truly been the greatest inventions of all time? Ask any simpleton off the street and they will tell you that fire should be on the list. I’m sorry, but that is not an invention, that is a discovery. It exists in nature in plain sight, we just ‘stole it from the gods’.
Real inventions are things like the steam turbine, refrigeration and rocket fuel (none of which appear in this list either). They required a genius - or perhaps a madman - to sit in his shed, and one day randomly think “I know what will revolutionize the way we live, and this is it!”
We believe you will disagree with some (or perhaps all) of the inventions on this list. And that is fine. But we have given our reasons for our choices, and all we can hope is that this eBook will stimulate debate amongst our readership.
Enjoy!
Jack & Jimmy
Dedication
This book is dedicated to Leonardo da Vinci, the father of modern invention.
10: The Mars Rover
Do you really need an explanation as to why the Mars Rover is a good invention? It’s a robot. That lives on freakin’ Mars. Whilst the UK was busily preparing for what the world later referred to as the most memorable Olympic Games in recorded history, the genius minds in the Jet Propulsion Lab at NASA decided to trump their achievement and put the US of A back into the news by landing the most sophisticated rover yet onto the surface of Mars.
