Description

Unbeaten Innings is the fascinating autobiographical account of the life of Steve Stephenson, MBE. It is a vivid insight into his love of sport, family life and career in local government; both as a social worker and as a prominent equality and human rights campaigner. It also highlights his dedication to tackling racism, both in his working environment and through a lifetime of voluntary work in support of Black cricketers and footballers, in particular. Steve Stephenson grew up in Kingston, Jamaica, and moved to the UK when he was eighteen years old. From his early years working on the assembly line at Chrysler to his role as a senior social worker and manager of the Malcolm X Centre in Bristol, Stephenson has dedicated his life to helping others. His years as leader of the Starlight Youth Club in Luton are just one example of his outstanding commitment to the voluntary sector, whilst his talent for raising money for charitable organisations has become legendary within the Black com

Steve has been involved professionally in community development, local government administration and policy development and social and community activism over several decades. His wealth of considerable relevant experiences qualifies him to write expertly on these matters. He has earned his credibility and respect from unstinting, selfless and dedicated work. Of most significance in recent time, is the role adopted by Steve in providing support to others in leadership positions, using his wealth of experience to provide expert advice on decision-making matters, guiding victims of discrimination to secure just outcomes and being a role model for many vulnerable young people in deprived communities.
HERMAN OUSELEY / LORD OUSELEY
I ve known Steve for many years now, and since I ve known him, he has not just been committed to flying the flag for cricket, but for using cricket as a vehicle to support and empower the inner city youths and the community at large. He has been dogged, determined and forthright in his quest for improving the lot of the West Indian community, and I know this book will be an inspiration for everyone!
JOHN BARNES MBE, FORMER PROFESSIONAL FOOTBALLER
We know of the great cricketers who play on the field, but the world doesn t always get to see some of the great people who make their contribution off the field. We want to again thank Steve for what he has done and will continue to do for the cricketers, the game of cricket and the people of the West Indies.
CHRIS GAYLE, WEST INDIES CRICKETER
In my several decades as a reporter of West Indies cricket in the UK and the Caribbean, I have known Steve Stephenson as the go to man for help and information on every aspect of the game, from club to international level. His record on promoting charity games and events, awards dinners, hands-on assistance to teams and individuals, with an eye to the future and a mind on the past, is exceptional. He is the indispensable Mr West Indies Cricket UK .
CLAYTON GOODWIN, JOURNALIST
This book is dedicated to my wife, Pamela, and our daughters, Andrea and Simone, whose understanding and sacrifices made it possible for me to do my work.
Acknowledgements
THE FOLLOWING INDIVIDUALS HAVE SUPPORTED and worked with me over many years at different times and places in local government, in the community, and in my voluntary and charity work. I am both inspired by and indebted to them as many of my painstaking and arduous community events would not have been possible without their blessing, hard work and support. The majority of them also spoke out against racial inequalities before the 2020 Black Lives Matter protests, when it was not popular to do so. I have the utmost respect for this group of people. A few of those listed have not worked directly with me, but they are mentioned because they are positive role models who have inspired many, including myself.

Prologue
S teve Stephenson, MBE, a veteran community and equality and human rights activist is a remarkable individual who amongst other things is a pioneer in community development in Britain. Steve is the former chairman of the Victoria Mutual Caribbean Cricket Cup National Competition in the UK, and I was honorary president. He has supported Jamaican and West Indian cricketers over the past 30 years and put on various functions for West Indies teams when they are in England. He is also the organiser of the Winston Davis Annual Benefit Match, of which I have been captain a few times.
Steve has been very consistent in his support for Jamaican and West Indies cricket and the Caribbean community in the UK over the years. He has managed to bridge the gap from one generation of West Indian cricketers to another, although the contribution he has made to club and league cricketers has not been fully recognised, especially the mentoring and support which contribute to these cricketers becoming responsible adults.
In addition to his commitment to the cricketing world, he has also been involved with charity work with famous footballers. During the period I worked with him, we managed to raise thousands of pounds for various charitable causes, together with the support of his wife Pamela and their two daughters.
