Description

From birth through our teens we experience quite a bit of life that is out of our control. One could say we are not in command of our lives during that period. The responsibility for our overall well-being lies with our parents or other adults. Once we have reached the legal age of self-responsibility, we have more control over who we are. How our life turns out is now in our personal care. The one constant during these episodes, peaks, and valleys of our lives is changing. Some changes are for the better, others could be harmful to our growth. But make no mistake about it, no matter where we are in our life cycle, over time everything must and will change. How our guardians or we facilitate, those changes are the key to a productive and happy life. Misguided Intentions provides a great read of how its central character and others meet, interacted, accepted or even rejected change. They all are wrestling with obstacles thrown their way every day. Each deals with it in their own way. The unthinkable, the unimaginable, subtle and not so subtle shifts in personalities are clear for the reader to consume. Faith, hope, and love are traits most characters lean on in their development. You get to examine the life and family relationships during the mid-sixties through the mid-seventies. Civil Rights, Viet Nam War, Drugs, Sex, Rock and Roll, Rhythm & Blues and Free Love were the topics of the day. It's an era when the younger generation looked to effect change in society. While the older more conservative folk wanted to retain the American way of life or status quo if you will. The central character, Annie Lee Holmes may seem like an enigma to us. She like us all has that bag full of life experiences weighing her down. You know...the one we keep adding to as we live our life. Her bags filled with mean spirited treatment from an assortment of people that would drive a less stronger person crazy. Now she has children and wonders what next. One husband has walked out on her and his children. Another has suddenly died after a year, leaving behind another child. Because of past experiences, she is not really sure how to be a human being much less a parent. She certainly would not categorize herself as having mental fortitude. Her environment is like playing a televised part in a murder mystery, Psychoanalysis Drama, or Days of Our Lives Soap Opera. The difference is many of these characters are from the other side of the track. Since she is allowed to survive; she continues to stumble on from day to day. Misguided Intentions paints a story of Annie Lee's life journey and its effects on her ever-changing personality. The mantra is keeping your eyes on where you are going, not necessarily where you are at any given time. Be aware the twist and turns along the way never actually cease. Our job is to maneuver around and even through the obstacles. As that George Benson's song says..."Everything must change, nothing stays the same." Peace, Blessings and keep it real.

PREFACE
Misguided Intentions is the fifth book I’ve authored over the last seven years. I’ve had conversations with numerous individuals whose thought of writing a book. The subject matter could be about their life, work or career. Those are the subjects that quickly come to mind for aspiring writers. It would be about something they have experienced or have some familiarity. If you read any of my works, you will find that I am a very opinionated individual. I like many others am an emotional writer. I want to ensure that the reader understands what the characters were feeling at all times. I too tend to stick with subjects with which I am familiar or simply have a fascination.
Misguided Intentions is no different. It takes place in an era (the Sixties) that I lived, observed, and played a part. What is important for you to note is the following: This is a fictional story. Although there may be actual names, real places, and locations, along with written accounts of historical events provided in this book, this is a fictional walk through a period during the characters lives. The walk is taking by fictional characters adding to fictional actions performed to make up a fictitious story line.
The mentioning of anyone’s name is not intended to embellish or embarrassed anyone whose name is known for certain deeds or actions they performed in history. Again, their mere reference is used solely for telling this fictional story. I am not trying to rewrite history. For accuracy of events, one should do their research.
Misguided Intentions is about relationships between mothers, fathers, children, other relatives, and neighbors. It depicts the deep dark secrets in the central characters past. It shows how it affected her, when she took hold of it and how life continues in spite of tragedy. The characters around her, including family members and friends, go about their lives growing up and evolving into better people. The one constant in this book reminds this author of a jazz guitarist and singer George Benson song. It’s entitled “Everything Must Change.”
Please note that I am a church going individual who believe in Jesus Christ as our Savior. Because of the sexual content in this book, I would not recommend it to anyone under sixteen. It is not x rated. As you read it, you find the sexual content fits the characters and is as it was in the Sixties.
Finally, as with all my books, I hope Misguided Intentions leaves you with an impression of what it was to live back then. How people in the neighborhoods thought and survived daily occurrences. And most of all provides a sense of “this too shall pass” as my Grandma Gracie Hampton and mother Doreatha Cole used to say.
My final thought is for you to cherish memories of family and people who are in your life. It doesn’t matter if it’s for a season of a chance encounter. All people who touch your life are there for some reason or another. You may never figure it out, but God knows.

Peace, Blessings and keep it real,

Codis Hampton II

OCCUPANTS OF THE HOUSE AT 18 TH AND VLIET STREET
T he Harper family, Manny, his wife Mae, and their two younger kids live in a three-bed, one bathroom first-floor unit. They had a temporary tenant in their oldest son Paul at the 18th and Vliet duplex. On this particular May 9th Sunday of 1965, twenty-one-year-old Paul Harper was lying alone on a bed, he shared with his younger brother James. Their bedroom, located in the back of the first floor, faced the smallish backyard of the two-story house. The air was still amid the faint sounds coming from the neighborhood. It was a typical Sunday morning in the middle of what had been a warm spring that seemingly promised more of the same today.
With his parents, sister, and brother away at church, Paul had opened the bottom half of the rooms full size two paned windows. The fresh air felt warm blowing over his face and bare chest. With eyes closed, he reminisced about the young lady he’d danced with the night before. It was the between the sheets dancing after the club that now occupied his mind. He and the cutie-pie made love up through the wee hours of Sunday morning. It was as if they were renewing a long lost friendship in spite of just having met each other
