Description

Is success down to who we have around us and listen to? Well this book examines that theory and looks into how some of our most successful sports and entertainment people built their teams and made sure they had the right people around them. Alex Ferguson, David Beckham, Lewis Hamilton, Andy Murray and Davina McCall are some of the people assessed.A major part of getting the best out of oneself is to take responsibility for who is In Your World. Andy Murray is someone who is a great team builder and his success is there for everyone to see.Along with identifying the right people you also have to know which people will have a toxic effect on your life - Dream Stealers for instance. The book gives the reader ways of identifying people that are not conducive to a positive environment.

Introduction
The beginning of your life does not have to determine where you end up. For as long as I can remember, I have had an interest in how people think and the psychology behind why certain people succeed and fail. We are all born into a world of so-called opportunity. Each one of us has the opportunity to achieve almost whatever we want – if we want it badly enough. This book will show that the people In Your World and the team you build can determine whether you can fulfil your full potential. This is, in fact, important for all of us, as do we know what’s going on around us? Are we aware of both good and bad influences? Do our families, friends, colleagues and even spouses want the best for us?
Eugene Luther Gore Vidal was an American writer who died in July 2012 at the age of eighty-six. A man of brutal honesty, he once said the following:

‘Whenever a friend succeeds, a little something in me dies.’

So, is that the truth? Do friends suffer when someone succeeds? The saying: You can choose your friends, but not your family , is true but we can still choose who we have around us and who we listen to. But working hard, alone, isn’t enough.
You have to work-smart, have the right people around you, listen to the right advice and hopefully get a little luck. Knowledge is such a powerful thing, but who is going to give you the knowledge? If you surround yourself with the right people, you will receive knowledge and information that will help you in your future life. So many people talk about dreams and aspirations, but never actually start on the journey. So many people have dreams that they don’t want to talk about, aspirations they don’t share with anyone and ambitions that some would feel are unrealistic.

If you lack the courage to start, you have already finished. Being scared of failure is often a reason not to try and an uncertain future can make people feel uncomfortable – but one thing is for sure:

If you don’t try, you will know the outcome.

If you try, you are uncertain of the outcome. An unrealistic starting position is sometimes an obstacle; why do some people feel that they shouldn’t have to start at the bottom? There is no better journey than the one that starts on a winding road and reaches a fabulous motorway. Everyone has dreams and aspirations and the moment we start; our odds go up dramatically. Of course, having the right people around us, and getting good advice makes the chance of success greater. For some inexplicable reason, there are people who just know they are destined to do something great and are meant to be successful or famous. Those who know they have the potential are haunted by it and it often keeps them up at night. Knowing that you should be doing something, but you don’t know what or how, can eat away at you. Like a plant in a greenhouse; if you’re in the right environment you will grow. With the right people around, you and good advice anything is possible. Politicians are deemed to be the most powerful people in the world; they are also supposed to have a high-level of intelligence, and in fact, most are educated to a very high level. If they hire advisors to make decisions, then why do so many people refuse advice? The point I’m going to make here is that politicians place an extremely high importance on advisors. They take advice from experts and they listen to advice. They have to make important decisions and want to make sure they get things right. In fact, it’s fair to say that no matter how good a politician is, they are only as good as their advisors and ultimately, decisions. So, if politicians are smart enough to have advisors, take advice and have the right people around them, why do so many people feel that they either don’t need advice, or do not place any importance on who is around them in their world?
We all have to make decisions and crucial ones determine how our lives pan out. And to that end, if you make the right decision, at the right time, in the right frame of mind, then you have a great chance of making huge steps forward. Decisions in theory should be made to achieve positive results, but people sometimes try and save face or place their ego and emotions ahead of making the right decision – that of course can be very dangerous. People who have made lots of good decisions historically can start believing that they are infallible and don’t need to listen to anyone. The ego then becomes more important than making the right decision. Similarly, people can make bad decisions when in an emotional state and don’t care about whether the decision is right; they just want to prove a point because it makes them feel better. One of the hardest things in the world to do is to stop and say: ‘I am not in the right mind-set to make that decision.’ Also, being able to ask for advice from people who normally see you as the leader and indestructible. If you don’t have smart, strong and long-term thinking people around you, decisions will be made based on ego and emotional point scoring. Being too proud is another dangerous area; even if you know what the right course of action is, being too proud stops you and harms your future. That’s why it is so important to have people around you who will be strong and be willing to fallout with you in order not to cut off your nose to spite your face as the saying goes. You are only as good as your environment, who’s around you and who you listen to. Everybody has some form of talent, ability and possibility, but how can someone fulfil their potential? I also thought about how much an individual could achieve if his/her environment was conducive to getting the most out of their life and career. Who you listen to and the people In Your World has a profound effect on how successful you become. We rely on input from others more than we realise, so how much can we achieve by receiving the right advice and having someone give us a motivational talk just before a performance, job interview or challenge?

People seeing something in us is of great importance.

We are not best placed to judge what our talents are or where our journey should go. Smart, experienced people in different fields can help us on to the right-path because they recognise the talents that we don’t often see in ourselves. But if we don’t surround ourselves with the right people, we have no chance of that happening; the moment we do, our odds of achieving our dreams goes up dramatically. Smart people, with bad experiences to tell, can help us too, because they can articulate why certain things are bad (from experience) and stop us from going down that same dark road. How beneficial would it be not to have a catalogue of wasted years on our CVs because we had people around us who were not wasters or riddled with resentment? If we could identify what and who needs to be in our worlds in order to get the most out of life surely, we would all do it? Whilst playing table-tennis for England, I travelled the world and met so many interesting people. The mental side of the sport could be applied to so many situations in life. It prepared me for my next life as an agent/manager. I hope to give you some anecdotes and philosophies that will get you thinking. Most importantly, we all have to think about our worlds and what input we have and why we create and have created certain worlds. Your world is the people around you; the family you listen to and spend time with and your thought process. The one thing I have found is that your mind-set and who you listen to has so much to do with how your life develops. There are people who create a world where they basically just go around in circles, discussing the same things and continually blaming everyone else and making excuses. They will say that they want to do certain things, but deep down they are scared and insecure. So, they create a world where they can’t move on. Those who have the power of their convictions, create a world of opportunity and, in it, they have people who show them how to move on and tell them things they don’t already know.
Fear and risk are parts of life that can be deemed negative. And stepping in to the unknown is something that, at times, is impossible to do on your own. But without risk, fear and the unknown, what do we have?
