Description

Dr. Hollander is a very straight forward speaker/writer. His approach is very specific and task oriented in order to provide a clear process to the student/family/reader. His examples are clear, factual, even at times a bit dramatic. Because he is a firm believer in a data based approach, he generates a great deal of documentation to illustrate progress. When not generating the amount of success he anticipates, he has a clear method for making constructive changes to the process to bring about the success.

ACKNOWLEDGMENTS
A manuscript such as this is not a sole production. Over the years I have received a great deal of feedback about my theoretical position, ideas, philosophy of approach, and schematic representations. This feedback from students, colleagues, friends, and clients have all contributed to this manuscript. To that end I am very grateful to all.
A very special thank you is for Ms. Carol Prehoda, Artist, for her ongoing support, feedback, and efforts to artistically represent my schematics from the cover of the text and throughout. I have enlisted her skills in various previous publications, and will continue to do so because of her professionalism, artistic skill, sense of humor, and loyalty.
Another thank you goes out to Ms. Sandy Savino, RN for her tireless efforts to review/edit, seek clarification, suggest additions, and also her sense of humor. The second edition is on the way. Thanks to Sandy.

NOTES

PREFACE
I have been working with severely cognitively and behaviorally impaired young people for over 50 years. My greatest success has been helping those with whom I work to perform at minimum all aspects of activities of daily living when other clinicians have given up. My focus is always on the client, AND the family, AND staff whenever possible. Key to our success has been the application of a scientific approach when both the behavior and cognitive abilities that we see seems to defy the application of a scientific principle.
In this publication my goals are to assist the reader to:
• identify the most basic building blocks of behavior
• to then target those specific aspects (building blocks) that are pre-requisite to behavior and cognitive development
• to construct a plan of correction (behavior plan) to effect the necessary change in the behavior
• to identify a method of measurement(s) to scientifically represent the effectiveness of the plan of correction (behavior plan)
• to develop and utilize a reward system that clearly works at teaching the new skills necessary for success - and this is quite different from the typical approach
• to develop a scientific process employing the plan, the measurement to identify either success or lack thereof that leads to a modification in the plan to establish and instill a meaning and purpose on everyone’s part that there is no quitting and no giving up unless success has been attained
In order for the reader to achieve these goals, clearly the reader must have an awareness of many different terms (many new terms contained in the publication), underlying concepts of behavior and intervention strategies related to Counseling, Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT), Perceptual-Motor-Cognitive Development, and Neurology. My plan for this book is to present key issues in an easily readable and understandable format to foster in the reader the ability to see the overall, implement a process, and evaluate the results in an objective/scientific manner. My approach differs greatly from other approaches because there is always a beginning, a process, and an end. This approach differs from many other professionals in that I am very dynamic, in constant motion, set very clear structure that emphasizes delay of gratification, frustration tolerance, compliance to cuing, and learning. For these reasons I am not for everyone that is referred to me. It is not uncommon for a family to see me a couple of times and discontinue sessions, only to come back many years later and seek my input when the anticipated behavioral changes had not been actualized.
Thank you for spending time with this book, and giving it a try. I hope you find it helpful.

CONTROL
Control is conceptualized as the ability to exert an influence over a desired outcome. If the self desires more heat, then the self can influence an outcome by turning up a thermostat to create more heat, or putting on additional clothing. If the self desires more food, then the self (if an infant) can cry due to being uncomfortable, which usually results in more food/drink/pacifier to satiate the need. If the self desires more food, then the self (child thru adult) can go to, open, select, and consume something from a food source - e.g. the refrigerator.
Control is also thought of as being part of a cont ingency. A contingency is basically a rule applying to a cause and effect outcome. Life is filled with contingencies every waking minute of every day of life there are contingencies. Contingencies, or rules, apply to either getting what the self wants, or avoiding what the self wants to avoid. In various situations each day of life there are individuals that exert more control over contingencies/rules than others. “The Man”, or government, tends to exert the most control over contingencies that impact every citizen. While work can equate with getting more money, so that you can buy more toys. Work can also equate to getting more money to pay more taxes. If you have a leaking pipe in your home you can hire a plumber, who exerts more control than you in terms of both skills and the opportunity to charge you money for fixing the pipe leak. The self can reject that plumber’s control/contingency by going to youtube and learning how to fix the pipe without the plumber. If you have the misfortune of having to appear in a courtroom, the judge is the ultimate contingency controller in that room. The judge both sets the rules of order, and can enforce said rules by making additional decisions that directly impact everyone’s life. Unless the jury finds a verdict that contradicts the judge... The self is on a quest to control, and to become the best contingency controller possible in life.
If you think about control in terms of either comfort or discomfort, the lack of something (a desired level of comfort in terms of a need, or a state or condition known as deprivation) then control is the ability to bring about a change in that level of discomfort, or deprivation, by obtaining what is desired. Thus overcoming the state, or condition of deprivation. Similarly, if the self is in a state of discomfort, then the reducing of the level of discomfort is also a form of control. As in trying to get comfortable in bed so you can fall asleep. We see that the issue of control can have multiple types of outcomes. Everything from the ideal where everything is under control (best case scenario), to totally out of control, where everything being done is not working (worst case scenario), and you ultimately suffer such consequences that make you more miserable. There is also the control of getting what you want but just not enough of what you want. Working really hard to get a decent pay raise but only getting a small percentage of raise instead. Working very hard to gain the affection of someone you are attracted to only to find out that the person of interest is already in a love relationship. Also, if an attempt to control is not me
