About the Publisher
INTRODUCTION

T he Ultimate Hunter s Handbook that s a pretty bold statement, wouldn t you say? But once you understand the amount of time, effort, and information contained in the pages you re about to read, then you ll know where we re coming from. This book is the documentation of our family s journey in the outdoors. It s filled with the mistakes and lessons that ultimately led to our success. In our opinion, failure can be a good teacher if you re willing to learn from it.
The stories you are about to read have been resurrected in order to bring laughter, learning, and helpful information to your next hunt and your everyday life. As you read, keep in mind that our family s definition of success isn t shooting the next record-book buck or a bull elk large enough to create a name for yourself. To the Holders, success is that you were there, fully present in the hunt, and that you re fulfilled because you gave your best effort. You placed yourself in a moment of time where everything else seemed to fade away in the excitement of the chase.
We are happy to provide you with the details and strategies we ve learned while stalking our wild adversaries. Sometimes we win (while hunting), and sometimes we learn. But each encounter we have with a wild animal is meaningful and memorable. We treat each hunt with respect and reverence, knowing that hunting has taught us more about life and ourselves than we ever could have learned in a classroom or lecture hall. The very existence of the wild game we pursue drives us to go places we never thought we could. Their uncanny ability to know our next move fuels us to look at who we are and reflect on the reasons why we do what we do.
When we immerse ourselves in God s outdoor classroom, we see, hear, smell, and feel things that most people don t even know exist. Some days, it s the beauty of a sunrise. On other days, it s hearing the high-pitched roar of a bull elk bugling in the canyon just a few yards from where we are standing. No matter the scenario, all of us here at Raised Hunting have been transformed in some way by the time we spend enjoying the outdoors.
The Ultimate Hunter s Handbook documents not only some of our successes but also plenty of trial and error-both in the woods and on our journey of faith. It s filled with ideas about how you can find your way through your next wild-animal encounter as well as your next spiritual encounter. After all, the ultimate hunter is Jesus because He is hunting for all of us and I ve heard His aim is true!
-------- WHAT TO EXPECT --------
Each chapter is broken down into four easy-to-read sections, all designed to help you become an ultimate hunter. Read each section carefully and use the insights gleaned from my family s outdoor successes and failures to help you be your best-spiritually, physically, mentally, and on the hunt. These are the four sections:
David s Pro Tip
Over the years, I ve accumulated a vast knowledge of both the animals we hunt and the conditions necessary to safely and effectively harvest them. In this portion, I will share with you some of my best tips and tactics (most of which I ve learned the hard way).
David s Life Tip
Life is a lot like hunting. The things that make us good hunters are often the same things that make us successful in our everyday routines. The lessons I ve learned while enjoying the outdoors have guided me in marriage, parenting, friendship, and even my faith in God. Here, you will see how being an ultimate hunter goes hand in hand with being an ultimate human being.
David s Faith Tip
Karin and I are Christians, and our faith guides us, but it hasn t always been that way. Here, I will be transparent about my relationship with God and how it s taken me a while to figure out how to walk with Him. If you re interested in strengthening your walk with God and overcoming anything negative from your past, then you ll love this portion.
Encouragement from Karin
I (Karin) have been a follower of Christ for most of my life. I ve learned to lean on Him for answers, direction, and sometimes sanity! I have written a few short devotions for this book that I believe will enhance your walk with God and give you some additional insight into how much the outdoor lifestyle really means to me. Use these mini faith tips to strengthen your relationship with the One who gave us the outdoors to enjoy.
Harvest Log
How many times have you enjoyed a hunt only to forget the key details of why it was so amazing? Over the course of my (David s) 40-year hunting career, I ve kept detailed logbooks. Doing so allows me to revisit any hunt that I ve been on in the past. At the end of this book, you ll find some of my blank harvest logs for you to use as you remember everything from the animal to the shot! Keeping a harvest log is also a great way to pass on your love of hunting to your children or grandchildren.
Godspeed and good hunting!
David

THE POST
David Holder
It s simple when we think about our lives like the fence lines that we pass every day. Some fence lines are straight and true, while others are crooked and loose. Eventually, they will all be broken and worn. But the ones that are built correctly and well cared for will stand the test of time.
If the fence lines represent life, then a fence post would represent a father and the connectors a mother. The post is what holds the fence up, while the connectors hold it all together. Our kids are the wire, jagged and barbed, running for miles, always reliant on the post and the connectors to keep them in place. If all the pieces stay connected, the fence will remain strong. The connector tightly holds the post to the wire, but the piece that determines whether the fence stands or falls will always be the post.

HOW YOU DO ANYTHING IS HOW YOU DO EVERYTHING

------ DAVID S PRO TIP ------
How You Practice Is How You Hunt
While hunting, I ve made just about every mistake known to man. I have a list of blunders a mile long. I ve misjudged creeks that I was sure would only be ankle deep at best, only to find out that unless my ankles were growing out of my armpits, the creek was a lot deeper than I thought! I ve hiked the most rugged terrain in pursuit of the big one, only to find that poor optics had me stalking a deer that wasn t even legal in the unit I was hunting. I ve set decoys in the wrong spots and facing the wrong way. I have rattled for deer when I should have been quiet, and I ve silently hunted turkeys when I should have been calling.
Some of our mistakes stand out more than others, and some can even alter everything we do in the future as hunters. I remember one particular occasion when I made a mistake I had often warned against. I wasn t living
