Description

Have you ever felt the call of God to go into all the world? David and Rosemary Harley did, and through simple obedience to that call they were able to have a worldwide impact on the spread of the Gospel. Together in Mission tells their story of leaving the UK to become full-time missionaries in Africa, and via several unexpected events helping to run All Nations College and latterly lead OMF International. Their story is in many ways a remarkable one, but the heart of this book is to inspire anyone and everyone to answer the call of God on their lives and see where it might lead them. It also highlights the continued need for the global Church to work together for the sake of the gospel.

“The boy who wants to be Archbishop of Canterbury/++ meets the girl who tried to prove that Jesus didn't exist! It's a great beginning for the life story of two people who have kept finding that God's plan for their lives was different from what they imagined. David and Rosemary have lived and worked through dramatic events in Ethiopia, spent years teaching in Britain, ministered in Korea, Nigeria, India, Brazil, Singapore…Their story is a fascinating whirl.”
Revd Professor John Goldingay
Professor of Old Testament, Fuller Seminary
“I want to thank David and Rosemary for sharing their missionary life stories in Africa, Asia, and globally. We can feel both the joy and excitement at the opportunities and the disappointments of setbacks in their journey. Yet, this couple persevere, trust God is at work, and see humour in adverse situations. Their heart to equip and train God’s people for God’s global mission runs through the whole book.”
Revd Dr Patrick Fung
General Director, OMF International
“I like reading books by Out of the Box people – and David and Rosemary are this kind of people. Books like this are urgently needed. Some say mission as a career is old hat and we are all missionaries. That’s true but we need people like David and Rosemary as much as ever before. Please read the book and let some of this reality impact you.”
George Verwer
Founder, Operation Mobilisation
“The Harleys share their journey in mission with honesty, humility and humour. David and Rosemary are a superb example of a couple in ministry and disciples together in mission. This wonderful book brings the reader into the joys, but also the dangers and frustrations of cross-cultural life and ministry. There is much wisdom shared in these pages, with insights on leadership, global mission and what it means to make the message of the gospel intelligible and meaningful to those across the street or across the world. I’ll be encouraging every applicant to OMF, and every mission partner serving with OMF, to read Together in Mission . I warmly commend this book and its authors.”
Dr Peter Rowan PhD
Co-National Director, OMF (UK)
“David and Rosemary’s friendship and support, welcoming me into their London home and their teaching and mentoring at All Nations Christian College, has been life-transforming. Their cross-cultural adventures in the UK, Africa and Asia, and their impact on the lives and ministries of so many others are told with their characteristic warmth, candour and humour. Their rich insights and practical experiences as a family committed to living out the Great Commission are a joy to read and an invaluable guide to God’s mission today.”
Dr Richard Harvey
Senior Researcher, Jews for Jesus
“Here is the story of David and Rosemary Harley’s adventures with the Lord they love, who led them step by step in faith and obedience in ways they simply never expected. Both called to teach God’s Word, both with pastoral hearts and global eyes, together in changing locations and circumstances they experienced the Lord’s gentle guidance over a lifetime of service. Their lives have touched a host of people in many countries and of many nationalities, with resultant ripples for the gospel far beyond themselves. Read this book. You will laugh and cry and be stirred to pray and to want to follow the Lord more closely. What better reason to read a book?”
Rose Dowsett
Vice-Chair of WEA Mission Commission
“Some great Christian leaders are considered so because of their prominent public ministries; others are considered great because of the profound influence they have in the growth of the kingdom of God. David and Rosemary Harley belong to the second category. This book, written in an engaging and winsome style, describes the lives and ministries of two influential missionary leaders. As you read, you will be inspired and instructed about what it means to live for Christ, serve him and give leadership to his people.”
Dr Ajith Fernando
Teaching Director, Youth for Christ, Sri Lanka

Foreword

Priscilla and Aquila: that’s who this book reminds me of. For that was another married couple who were “together in mission”, supporting the ministry of the Apostle Paul and equipping Apollos for his cross-cultural missionary sending. (Acts 18:24–28) They are always mentioned together and Priscilla is usually mentioned first, just as David repeatedly and self-deprecatingly underlines and praises Rosemary’s gifting and qualifications as a teacher.
Now, most married Christians who are serving in mission will express their appreciation for the support of their spouses. But Rosemary and David are unusual as a couple, both of whom have complementary callings and gifts, and who have genuinely worked and served together, enabling, encouraging and facilitating each other’s ministry, even occasionally to the point of insisting that the one will not serve without the other. So this is not just a remarkable life story; it is also a challenging model of what genuine “partnership in mission” can look like, in a marriage where both honour the originality and integrity of each other’s calling to serve the Lord. It reminded me of a small calligraphy picture that hung above my parents’ bed: “Each for Other: Both for God.”
A second big impression as one reads on, is just how flexible and adaptable David and Rosemary have had to be in their long career in mission. Some of the changes of direction came unbidden and were unwelcome, and they honestly convey the struggles and initial disappointments of such times. But equally, they show how God proved his faithfulness at each step as they responded with obedience and trust. That reminded me of how the Apostle Paul had to cope with occasions when the Holy Spirit said, “No, not this way,” and then he had to wait, shelve his plans, and receive fresh direction. The gospel came to Europe after one such season of uncertainty, and with a note of irony too, in that Paul hears “a man from Macedonia” asking for help, but when he gets there, the first person to respond to the gospel is a woman from Thyatira – the land he had just left!
When the Harleys left All Nations Christian College in 1993, after one major phase in their ministry, I had been on the teaching staff there for five years and was about to take over from David as principal. As you will read, they were moving into a ministry of international training for mission for others on several continents. So I sought to keep them humble by calling them just “a pair of old trainers”. My point is, they have been wholly committed to the crucial importance of proper training for the challenges of cross-cultural mission. Their story illustrates in several places the disasters that can happen when untrained men and women, full of zeal but little knowledge, are let loose in cultures not their own. Training costs time and money, but one lesson that I hope this book will reinforce, is that training is essential and well worth the cost.
You will probably lose count of the number of countries David and Rosemary have visited – but the cumulative impact is a kaleidoscopic awareness of the global church in all its diversity. And mission mirrors that kaleidoscope. The old adage that mission was “from the West to the Rest” was never true anyway. Mission has been going in all directions ever since the New Testament. Middle Eastern missionary bishops established the church in Ethiopia, for example, at least a hun
