Description

Life at sea can be treacherous, challenging, life threatening but also monotonous. Those who serve in the Royal Navy, the Merchant Fleet or as fishermen can be away from family and friends for many months at a time and living in cramped conditions. Living out a good and wholesome life at sea without a solid foundation based on faith can see a person falling for the dangerous currents of the wills and desires of a fallen world.
What we find in the life and writing of John Newton is one who was rescued from the turmoil of life and saved by grace. Newton s conversion proclaims the power of God: By the grace of God, I am not what I was. Newton can speak to us today of what it means to rely not on our own moods and temperament but on the amazing grace of God who can transform and renew. The imagery that Newton uses of calmness speaks well to those in the maritime world, for there we find assurance that we will not be tossed around by the changing opinions and chances of this world. This Through the Year collection provides a fascinating insight into the work of John Newton, who shows the relevance to people today of a faith that transforms and renews.

I NTRODUCTION

The life of John Newton has taken its place in the annals of Christendom as one that was remarkable, from a childhood marked by tragedy (the death of his beloved mother), brutality, and isolation (the inadequate care of his austere father), to a ministry as an Anglican cleric whose influence was colossal, with its hallmarks of compassion and intelligent pastoral concern.
Mention of John Newton inevitably provokes reference to his hymn Amazing Grace and his life-changing experience during a storm at sea. Both examples are testimonies to providential mercy, but, as this book stresses, it would be a mistake to concentrate mainly on the hymn or Newton s survival in the ocean. There was so much more to John Newton s days, not least his prolific output of letters covering an enormous breadth of spiritual counsel, his happy marriage to his childhood sweetheart, and years spent as a preacher who managed to successfully connect Scripture to hearts and heads.
Newton s passion was to establish a connection between earth and heaven, demonstrating his belief that holiness could be outworked in practical ways. His ministry shone with humility and realism, for he knew his own heart and understood the tribulations of human nature striving towards the divine.
Such was the abundance of Newton s writings, only a fraction of them are represented here, and vary in length.
