Ms. Parvesh Handa receiving the Micro Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) National Award for the year, 2012 in the MSME Sector on March 1, 2014 at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi.
During pregnancy, the expectant mother should see her doctor at least once a month to get herself examined to make sure that the foetus is developing satisfactorily. Besides, she needs to do a lot herself and this book tells all that. Various problems faced by a pregnant woman prior to conception, during pregnancy, labour and after delivering the child have been described in this book in detail.
Thanks to the amazing advances of medical science, the discomforts connected with pregnancy have become much easier to cope with, and with a little care, you can make your pregnancy and life enjoyable. So it is no longer time to worry about or brood over but to plan and dream.
I am thankful to medical experts and gynecologists for the cooperation and assistance in writing this book useful for the pregnant women. The readers should keep in mind that medical treatments referred in this book are for reference only, and it is neither a medical guide nor a manual of self-treatment. No medical treatment should be taken without consultation with a qualified doctor.

Chapter 1
Important Facts Prior to Conception
I am getting married shortly, but I am unaware about the functioning of various genital parts of the body. I feel shy to know from my mother. Can you brief me about it?
E very woman, before getting married should know about the functioning of different genital parts in the body. I have come across several women getting married or expectant mothers having the least knowledge of their own body organs. Many teenagers, even the newly married women feel hesitant to ask questions about the male or female genital organs, though their knowledge is essential for a happy married life and make pregnancy painless, enjoyable and healthy. Following is a brief description of the important body organs playing a significant role during pregnancy.
The Vulva is an ill-defined area, which in gyanaecological practice comprises the whole of the external genitalia. A woman’s perineum includes the pelvic floor muscles, external genitalia, urethra, anus and portion between the vagina and the anus. The external genitalia include the vaginal opening, clitoris, labia majora, labia minora and mono pubis – the fatty tissue over the pubic bone.

The mons pubis is the visible part of the genital organ when in the upright posture with cushion of fat in the front and is covered with curly hair after puberty. It has two outer lips of the vulva called the labia majora . After the age of 16, hair appears at the outer surface of the labia majora and sometimes on the perineum skin . The inner surface of the pinkish coloured labia majora is the soft, moist, hairless and pinkish coloured body having the sebaceous glands , sweat glands and hair follicles liable to common skin disorders, such as lesions, boils and cysts .
The labia minora lies on the inner aspect of the labia majora : a thin fold of skin without the sebaceous glands or hair follicles but have veins and elastic tissue, which erect during sexual activity. The Bartholin’s Gland is a compound measuring about 10 mm in diameter and about 25 mm long, secreting lubricating mucus during coitus .
The clitoris consists of glands covered by the prepuce and a body which is subcutaneous that corresponds to the male penis attached to the under surface of the pubis . The clitoris is extremely sensitive and during coitus, it becomes erect playing a considerable part in inducing the orgasm of the female.

The Uterus also called the womb is a compartment in the female body in which a baby forms and grows till birth. A pear-shaped hollow thick walled muscular organ situated in the pelvis behind the bladder and in front of the rectum, deep in the lower abdomen is divided into two parts: The upper part called the body and the lower part called the cervix , which protrudes into the vagina .
The uterus is about 3”x2”x1” in size in non-pregnant state and gradually stretches to accommodate a fully formed baby. The size and shape of a normal uterus varies, such as an infantile uterus ranges from 2 to 3.3 cm. in length with 0.5 to 1 cm in diameter. The weight of a virgin’s uterus is usually 42 gm and the pear-shaped uterus gradually increases in size with the advancement of pregnancy.
Fallopian Tubes extend from the upper side of the uterus towards the ovaries located on each side of the uterus. Ovaries produce sex glands: Estrogen, Progesterone and the Female Sex Hormones. Estrogen stimulates the development of secondary sexual characteristics, such as enlarged breasts, body hair in females, etc. The ovaries also ripen and expel the ova known as the eggs.
How conception and pregnancy take place?
After sexual intercourse, the sperm travels from the vagina through the cervix into the cavity of the uterus along the fallopian tubes. Conception takes place when a single sperm penetrates or fertilizes an ovum, forming a single cell . Although, large numbers of sperms ejaculate and reach the ovum, only one penetrates it and once the ovum is fertilized, a chemical reaction occurs preventing other sperms from penetrating. After fertilization, the ovum travels along the fallopian tube and embeds within the uterus giving the baby unique inherited characteristics, such as skin, hair and eye colour, height, body shape, type of blood, sex, etc. About 4” in length, the vagina runs from the cervix between the bladder and the rectum unites with the uterus and the vulva, an important organ in the female body. The upper broad end of the uterus opens on either side into two long tubes, called the fallopian tubes varying from 7 to 12 cm. in length, each ending in a funnel-shaped opening guarded by five finger-like projections.

What is the role of Penis in a male body?
The Penis is the male genital organ that serves a dual function of erection and excretion of urine and semen. It is composed of three cylindrical structures of cavernous. The blood supply to the penis is primarily made through arteries at the base of the penis, which supply blood to the skin and glands of the penis. Until recently, it was felt that psychological factors cause male impotency. However, studies have revealed that a majority of the cases of impotency have organic causes. Studies reveal, Vasculogenic impotence is due to poor arterial inflow into the penis causing erecti
