I NTRODUCTION
The title of this book refers to the United States as an empire which may be a reference you’ve never heard in connection with the United States. This is because even though the United States has many characteristics of an empire, it does not literally fit the traditional definition of an empire. Merriam-Webster defines an empire as a major political unit having a territory of great extent or a number of territories or peoples under a single sovereign authority, especially one having an emperor as chief of state (italics mine). This definition implies political, economic, social, religious, and military control over nations, states, and/or other territories. As such, the United States does not technically fit this definition.
However, because the United States has greater wealth than any other nation in history, as well as the strongest military, largest economy, and greatest influence, many have and still do refer to the United States as an empire, thus the title The Empire of the United States . In fact, other than the territorial domination and rule by an emperor as stated in Webster’s definition, the United States would fit the definition of an empire. Even so, some people believe that the United States is an imperial nation and as such does have territorial domination over other nations and, therefore, refer to the country as the Empire of the United States. Therefore, I take the liberty of referring to the United States as an empire in this title. Be that as it may, historically, all empires have a limited life span and, in this sense, biblically speaking, so does the United States.
There is a lot going on in the world today, and many people sense that something is dreadfully wrong in our nation, the United States. Some reports show that as many as 88 percent of US citizens believe that our country is headed in the wrong direction. We see our governmental officials arguing and attacking each other while getting little or nothing accomplished that would benefit the citizens of the nation as a whole. We see economic and financial problems at a greater magnitude than ever before. We see our nation becoming more and more secular as it moves further away from God and biblical principles. We see more and more people asking questions like "Are we living in the last days?" or "Are we facing Armageddon?" or "Is the US going broke?" And even though most of the other developed countries are also in bad shape, everyone’s eyes are on the United States. This is because the United States has been the dominating force among nations in the world for decades. The United States has been the dominant economic, military, and political power in the world for many years. However, in the past three or four decades, the United States has undergone massive changes, and even more so in the past five or ten years, so everyone’s eyes are on this country. So where does the United States fit in with other nations as we move closer and closer toward the end of this age?
To accurately answer that question, we must go to the Bible, God’s written word to humankind, and carefully read what is prophesied. Bible prophecy is one of those areas of theology that most churches devote little or no time to, and there are several reasons for this. One is that some Christians who study prophecy get sidetracked with it, and the only thing they think about is prophecy, excluding all other biblical subjects and doctrines. Prophecy begins to dominate their lives, and they begin setting dates, identifying the Antichrist, interpreting signs, and other such activities. Some churches don’t teach prophecy because they’ve gotten abused or hurt in the past with false prophetic interpretations. Pastors and other church leaders got so involved in church prophecy until that is all they taught, and many made serious errors in their teachings. They prophesied certain events to take place, but when these events did not occur, people were disappointed and hurt. Many had their faith shaken, and some people even stopped going to church altogether. Then there are some churches that stay away from prophecy because they don’t feel comfortable teaching it. Bible prophecy requires a great deal of time in study and research because there are fifteen prophetic books in the Bible, and these books need to be studied in conjunction with each other (as well as the rest of the Bible) to see how they interrelate and complement each other. Then there are symbols and signs that must be interpreted. There are also historical events in which students and teachers of prophecy should become aware. So some churches prefer not to venture into all of this. Then there are some churches that believe prophecy is not all that relevant to Christian living.
Still the church is required to teach the entire Word of God (Acts 20:26–27). If we are to teach the entire Word of God, we cannot ignore the large percentage of prophecy found in the Bible. Twenty-seven percent of the Bible is composed of prophecy, and we cannot really ignore 27 percent of the Bible that’s 8,352 verses in the Bible that are prophetic. Furthermore, five times in the Gospel of Mark, Jesus tells us to watch out and be on guard when we see certain things happening; the end is near, even right at the door. He mentions a variety of events to look for in Matthew 24, Mark 13, and Luke 21. Not only that, in Paul’s second letter to Timothy, he told him that all scripture is inspired by God and is profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness (2 Tim. 3:16). This all includes the 27 percent of the Bible that is prophecy. There are also other tremendous benefits in studying Bible prophecy: (1) Prophecy is evidence that God exists. There are more than one hundred prophecies about Jesus Christ in the Bible that have been fulfilled down to a T. (2) Prophecy gives us hope for the future. When we look at what God has prophesied for us in the future getting rid of sin, sickness, and death; getting rid of evil; setting up a world-ruling kingdom; and giving all of positions our positions to serve Him it gives us great hope and assurance for the future. (3) Prophecy encourages a lifestyle of integrity. Because we know what is going to happen in the future, it motivates us to live a life of holiness in the present. This brings us peace, contentment, and joy right now here on earth.
With this in mind then, it is important for those of us who are pastors, teachers, and other church leaders to see that our parishioners receive some prophetic messages so we can more effectively adhere to the entire Word of God. There is just so much happening in the world today and many questions being asked that can only be answered through prophetic teaching. Therefore, I believe it is helpful to at least periodically keep ourselves aware of what’s going on in the world from a biblical and prophetic perspective. Some of us have been in churches that specialized in Bible prophecy but were later found to be in error. However, we should not let these bad experiences deter us from pursuing the truth and studying biblical prophecy. Daniel made it clear that we would increase in prophetic knowledge as we move closer and closer to the end-times. This inevitably means that there would be a lack of knowledge and understanding earlier on. Instead of running away from Bible prophecy, we should find reputable Bible prophecy scholars and verify that what is being taught is biblically accurate. Also, we should make sure that whatever sources we use to study are valid sources from highly respected theologians and scholars. And third, we need to make sure that as we use these sources, we verify the information by first studying the scriptures and then checking other sources (e.g., extra-biblical source
