Insights from Chapter 1
#1
The Sierra Madre has one of the largest rain forests in the Philippines. It’s home to a surviving hunter-gatherer group called the Agta. The Agta value storytellers more than those who bring home the bacon and snacks.
#2
I had found something beautiful to give to the love of my life. I had arranged for my family, both sets of her parents, and her best friends to be present the moment I popped the question. It was a challenge to coordinate the schedules of twenty-plus loved ones from around the world, but with help from others, it happened.
#3
The proposal took place at my parents’ house in Jacksonville, Florida. I gave Demi a small velvet box that contained a non-engagement ring. I figured that if she had any expectations of getting an engagement ring, she would be disappointed by the non-engagement ring.
#4
I took Demi to the pond where I had buried my previous dog, Otis. I had prayed about where to go to college, and now another event was emerging that would change the course of both of our lives.
#5
I spoke from my heart. I can’t tell you everything that was said, but here are the lines that mean the most: Demi, I love you so much. I wanted to bring you here, to where I grew up, to a place that I love so much, so I could be with the person I love the most. When I first saw you, you gave me so much hope. When I first heard your voice, you gave me so much belief.
#6
When we choose to trust God with our lives, we have a sense of a higher calling. We recognize that significance matters more than success. We are motivated not by what others think about us but by how God sees us.
#7
A mission-possible life is not about you, but about others. It involves being motivated by something other than yourself. It can be unpredictable, but in a good way. It will require you to submit your preferences to God, and sometimes that doesn’t feel good or look favorable.
#8
The prophet Jonah was sent to Nineveh, the capital of the ancient empire of Assyria, to preach to the citizens. However, he hated the Ninevites and wanted to destroy them, rather than save them. He then fled to Tarshish, where he was swallowed by a fish for three days. When he was released, he cried out to God and repented.
#9
The prophet Jonah was more concerned about what his fellow Israelites would think of him than about God fulfilling His greatest mission: saving humankind. He fled to Tarshish, where he thought God was not going to bother him, but in reality, he was destroying his career as a prophet.
#10
We must be different in order to make our lives count. We must be willing to sacrifice something for God that he wants us to do, because it will make us look different from the world's standard of beauty.
#11
A mission statement is a concise statement of what you want your life to stand for.
