Insights from Chapter 1
#1
The Brooklyn Tabernacle, a church I had pastored, was a shabby two-story building in the middle of a downtown block on Atlantic Avenue. The sanctuary could hold fewer than two hundred people, but we didn’t have the money to improve it.
#2
I was not qualified to be a minister, but my wife, Carol, was a gifted organist and pianist, so I got through it by relying on her talent. We moved to New Jersey, and somehow we made it through that first year.
#3
I was asked to preach at the multiracial Brooklyn Tabernacle, another church my father-in-law supervised. The atmosphere was tense, and the worship style was chaotic. I sensed that the church had big problems.
#4
The church’s first mortgage payment was due at the end of the month. The checking account showed that they would default right off the bat. I prayed to God, and he answered my prayers by sending two $50 bills through the mail.
#5
I began to feel drawn to the Brooklyn Tabernacle, even though my salary came from the Newark church. I did not have any preconceived ideas about ministry from Bible college or seminary, so I had to learn as I went.
#6
I had to stop trying to act ministerial, whatever that was. I had to stop trying to affect a posture or pose, and start being natural and sincere. I began building a biblical library and giving many hours during the week to studying God’s Word.
#7
I began to pray that the members of my church would leave. I was learning that in pastoral work, as in basketball, you have to confront.
#8
I knew that God wanted to do more in my church than just grow attendance. He wanted to transform the desperate lives of people around me. I was tired of the escapist mentality that I had seen in many churches since childhood, and I hungered for God to break through in our lives and ministry.
#9
I had come down with a cough that would not go away. I was spitting up phlegm every day. I went out on a party fishing boat with twenty or thirty tourists. The sky was an azure blue, and the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico lapped soothingly against the sandy shore.
#10
I had heard from God, even though I had not experienced some strange vision. God was simply focusing on the only answer to our situation: him.
