D EDICATION
To Nancye My Mother, My Rose
A CKNOWLEDGEMENTS
This book has been many years in the making. I have struggled with the responsibility of such an important collection but have been urged forward by the contributions from others, the positive responses to my own stories, and personal experiences at my therapeutic story seminars.
Thank you to the 34 teachers, psychologists, social workers, storytellers, parents and grandparents from across the globe who took the time to share their stories and story outcomes with me, then generously agreed to contribute them to this book. And much gratitude to Benjamin Aukram, Austin Clark-Smith and Katie Hepton for allowing their healing words from the ‘Our Kids Project’ (Lismore Base Hospital) to be shared in this collection.
A heartfelt ‘thank you’ to my loving husband John Adam for his patience and support, including many shoulder massages, through the long journey of crafting this book. And to my children and grandchildren for their enduring love and encouragement of my story passion, and especially to my youngest son Jamie Perrow for his help shaping the cover with his designer ‘eye’.
To my publisher Martin Large for his trust in me and my work, to Claire Percival for her prompt replies to my many emails, to Katie Bevan for her artistic formatting, to Lucy Guenot for her talent with the beautiful cover image, and to Alida Gersie for her helpful suggestions on the introduction. Especial thanks to Richard House for his generosity and insight during his thorough and encouraging copy-edit process, helping to polish this book in readiness to shine out to the world.
A collection like this has required dedicated mentoring and guidance from several colleagues and friends. I am especially indebted to Paula Bowles (Member of the Australian Psychology Society) for our discussions on the sensitive challenges of compiling this collection. And to Julie McVeigh, Di Kelly and Margaret King for their feedback and reflections.
Last, but definitely not least, a mighty ‘thank you’ to my special Byron Writers Group – the Zinklings – Lynton Burger, Jenni Cargill-Strong, Vicky King, Mitchell Kelly, Jay McKenzie and Ana Davis. You cared for me like family, nursing my stories through the ups and downs of writing’s many challenges.
