Honest Khudiram’s Struggle
Once upon a time, there lived a devout Brahmin in Derepur, West Bengal. His name was Khudiram Chattopadhyaya. He was a noble and God-loving man. He had a wife. Her name was Chandra Devi. She also was simple and open-hearted like Khudiram. They led a humble yet happy life together with their children, a son and a daughter. They named their son Ramkumar and daughter, Katyayani.
Khudiram had one hundred and fifty bighas of land, a pond and a house in Derepur. The landowner of the area was Ramananda Roy. One day, he asked Khudiram to give a false statement against a poor man in the local court.
“Khudiram, you are an honest man! The entire village respects you!” said Ramananda in his heavy voice.
“I’m obliged to hear this, Sir.”

“So, Khudiram, I want you to help me with a court case, will you?”
“How can I help you, Sir?” Khudiram was surprised to hear this.
“I want you to be my witness against that arrogant farmer.”
“You mean I must give false statement against that poor farmer?”
“Yes.”
“No! Never!” Khudiram was firm.
“I practice honesty, Sir. God loves truth. He, who loves truth dearly, sits on the lap of God.” Khudiram tried to explain the haughty landlord.
When Khudiram refused to tell a lie, Ramananda got angry and threatened him.
“I’ll grab everything you have and drive you out of the village.”
But Khudiram felt no fear. He decided to go through any kind of suffering for the sake of truth.
The landowner filed a false case against Khudiram. He also seized his land, garden, house and everything.
“We have lost everything! We’re going away from this village,” Chandra wept bitterly.
“Chandra, we’re just going away from the village but if I had obeyed the greedy landlord and told a lie, I would have gone far away from God. We have lost money but still have honour,” explained the pious Brahmin.
“You’re right, my lord,” nodded Chandra.
Poor Khudiram did not know where he would go and how he would feed his family. But he had faith in God. Luckily, he met his long-lost friend Sukhlal. He lived in Kamarpukur, a village in Hooghly district. Sukhlal came to know about Khudiram’s struggle.
