Description

Geared toward women, this spirituality book offers a Christian living guide demonstrating how to bring joy back into the home.

Are you tired of being a mad mom? Do you even know what makes you happy? Do you know how to have fun? Do you work on your to-do list every day but never feel like you’re getting anywhere? Are you the anchor for your family and friends, but need a break from the weight of the world? Is the sense of joy missing from your life?

It is possible to be joyful again. In Small Hinges Move Big Doors, author Amy Kvell offers a Christian living guide for women that demonstrates small hinges are the daily things you can do to improve your health, grow your faith, tend to your family, and build your community. Your big goals won’t be able to resist the forward motion you’ll create with these daily practices.

Kvell shows how being consistent with these small hinges allows you to move big doors. Even if your current hinges are rusty or broken, it’s possible to swing open the front door each morning and discover more joy.

Dedication
To my Grandma Bert one of the best joy givers I know.
To those who feel like they have lost joy and are looking for it.
Preface
I have always had an obsession with doors. I love the design of doors. I love the color of doors and their histories. I wonder who lives behind doors.
As a life and wellness coach, one idea that has really stuck out is that small hinges move big doors. I work with people who are trying to make big life changes. The changes have to do with health, relationships, gratitude, or spending more time with God. I wanted to write a book to show how daily choices were small hinges that would eventually help people move those big doors—and reach their goals.
Acknowledgments
Thank you to all the joy givers in my life.
My daughters, you have taught me how to love unconditionally and with all my heart, soul, and mind.
Jason “my best half” Kvell, I could not have done any of this without you. Thank you for always supporting me and running with me through all my wild ideas, from late night prayers to editing sessions. We make a great team, babe.
Mom and Dad, you supported me and gave me a life that was worthy of writing about.
Laci Hansard and Missy Fallert you believed in me enough to be on the team and make this happen.
My Bible studies girls and women, you are the reason that I wrote this book. It was in the hope that when I am gone, all the things we have learned from one another will always be here for people to see and that they would see Jesus is our ultimate joy!

Introduction
Let’s have some fun. Below is a place where you can draw. Now draw a door on it. It’s OK if you aren’t an artist. I’m not either. Make a rectangle. If you want to have some fun, draw a wreath, a doorstop, or maybe a “Do Not Enter” sign. Do whatever brings you joy.
Your Door Drawing

Now imagine pushing on the door, but it won’t open. It’s not because you aren’t smart enough or strong enough. You can’t open the door because you didn’t draw any hinges. Draw two or three hinges on your door. Hinges are little things that have a big impact.
In this Christian living guide, we will think of small hinges as daily things that we can do to encourage health, spiritual well-being, our families, and our community. Being consistent with these small hinges will allow us to move big doors. Your big goals won’t be able to resist all that forward motion.
Are you just surviving each day and feeling stuck? Perhaps your hinges need oiling. You know what to do, but you are not setting yourself up for success. Are you
• reading your Bible, praying, talking to God, or building a personal relationship with Christ?
• attending church or trying out a new church?
• spending time with a community of like-minded people?
• practicing gratitude?
• drinking water and getting enough sleep?
• using planners and to-do lists?
• completely unhinged?
Is your door off the frame and waiting to be repaired? Perhaps your hinges are just busted. Well, there’s nothing like a fresh start. Whether you need to attach new hinges or just oil up the ones you have in place, let’s build your faith to start opening some doors and to serve. Are you ready?

Before we begin to look at oiling some hinges, let’s spend some time in chapter 4 of the book of Zechariah. It’s not as well-known as the other books of the Bible, so let’s go over some background on Zechariah. Zechariah was a minor prophet and was regarded as an inspired teacher and proclaimer of God’s will. His name means “the Lord remembers.” (Bible study tools online)
He was a prophet who was around when the Jews were allowed to return from Babylon to Jerusalem. He was with Zerubbabel and Joshua the high priest when they were working on rebuilding the temple of God. He was writing his book of the Bible right before the story of Esther, who would become queen of Persia, took place. Zechariah’s main goal was to encourage and inspire so that the temple would be complete with the future hope of the Messiah’s coming.
Let’s talk more about Zerubbabel. He was a descendant of David. He was a Babylonian Jew (a Jewish person who had lived in captivity in Babylon). He returned to Jerusalem and became the leader of the Jews who had moved back to Israel. He helped rebuild the temple.
Let’s dig in, ladies. Be sure to have your Bibles and journals when using this Christian living guide. Zecha riah 4:6 says, “Then he said to me, ‘This is what the Lord says to Zerubbabel: It is not by force nor by strength , but by my Spirit, says the Lord of Heaven’s Armies ’” (NLT, emphasis mine)
Force meant doing something against their own wills or even in their own strength as a nation or group of people. They couldn’t move without God saying so.

Hinge s only go one way. What happens when you try to push or force a door the wrong way? It won’t open. You run into the door. You feel stuck or complacent.
Stren gth, a singular person’s intensity of feeling or belief, is not enough to move the doors either. We need a bigger strength than our own. No matter how strong we are, life is going to be filled with stressful and difficult circumstances. We need God’s strength to handle it. We do n’t have to feel like we have it all together. OK, ladies, read that again. Now s ay this out loud five times: “I don’t have to have it all together.”
What force will help us move big doors? It’s like the song I heard on Joy FM radio, which said, “The God of angel armies is always by my side.” God wants to fight our fights with us. Angel armies and the Creator who knows me better than anyone are who I want fighting my battles. We know who is on the winning team. Jesus gives us the victory over sin and death, so He can give us the victory in other areas of our lives too. What areas of your life do you want victory in?
