About the Author
F R. IGNATIUS (Carsidoni) of the Side of Jesus (1801-1844) was one of the behind-the-scenes influences on the rebirth of the Catholic Faith in England. Fr. Ignatius taught theology in Rome. There he became fired with the zeal of his fellow Passionist, Blessed Dominic Barberi (1792-1849), for the conversion of England. Bl. Dominic had “inherited” this supernatural passion from St. Paul of the Cross, the founder of the Passionists.
In 1831, an English Catholic lady named Mrs. Louisa (Spencer) Canning met Fr. Ignatius in Rome and from him “caught” the Passionist zeal for the conversion of her homeland. Mrs. Canning became part of a little network of Catholics who prayed ardently and worked valiantly to bring the Passionists—and the Catholic Faith—to England. After many trials, Bl. Dominic finally succeeded in planting the Passionist Order there in 1842. His work coincided with “The Oxford Movement” in the Church of England; Bl. Dominic was God’s instrument in inaugurating the “second spring” of the Catholic Faith in England, the most famous element of which was John Henry Newman’s reception into the Catholic Church by Bl. Dominic Barberi on October 9, 1845. Fr. Ignatius had played his providential part in these crucial first steps of the return of England to the Catholic Faith.

Preface to the 1895 Edition
I N PRESENTING this valuable little book to the Catholic public, it may be well to say a few words on the nature and advantages of such a work. It is a translation from the Italian of Father Ignatius of the Side of Jesus, a member of the Passionist Order, and may be recommended as one of the best books that has yet appeared in any language on the sufferings and death of Our Divine Lord, presenting at the same time a simple and easy method of uniting our lives and actions, our sufferings, our mortal toil and the weariness of spirit that follows us our whole life through, with the sufferings of Our Crucified Lord. The plan of the book is so clearly laid down in the author’s Address to the Devout Reader that it is unnecessary to say more on that head. But the advantages to be derived from the habitual use of such a book cannot be too highly estimated, and to that we would call the reader’s attention.
“The School of Jesus Crucified!” What Christian would not wish to study therein, to learn wisdom and patience and resignation to the Divine Will from the example of the God-man, who came on earth and assumed our frail mortality to be to us a model, as well as a Redeemer? This is the school in which all the Saints of God obtained their honors. There doctors and schoolmen, popes and prelates learned wisdom, virgins purity, martyrs and confessors strength and fortitude; there all the faithful learned faith and piety. The whole world united could not teach one lesson of the heavenly science whose treasures are all contained in this small volume. Whosoever would gain eternal life must become as a little child, and apply himself with humble, docile heart to study in “The School of Jesus Crucified,” the manual of which is here presented to the Catholics of America. It has been prepared expressly to spread devotion to the Passion of Our Lord by a distinguished member of the Passionist Order. The present translation will be found a very good one. The work is henceforward to be used by the Passionist Fathers in their missions and has received all the additions necessary to adapt it to the purpose of a mission book. It contains Devotions for Mass, also Prayers for Confession and Communion, and the Holy Way of the Cross. With these few remarks, we commend it to all devout Christians as a book calculated to increase their fervor and unite them more closely to Jesus Crucified.

Address to the Devout Reader
T HE principal object I have had in view in publishing this little book has been to awaken in the hearts of all Christians a devout remembrance of the Passion of Jesus Christ. I have attempted to lay down some simple rules, by the observance of which, in the principal actions of the day, we may never lose sight of our Divine Model, and of His bitter sufferings. I have arranged a short meditation on some mystery of the Passion of Jesus Christ, for each day of the month, in order to facilitate the practice of spending some small portion of every day in meditating on the sufferings of our Crucified Redeemer. And in order that the most sacred actions of the Christian’s day, such as the reception of the Sacraments, and assistance at Mass, may be performed with more piety by means of a devout remembrance of the Passion, I have attempted to arrange an easy method for that purpose. I have endeavored, as far as possible, to adapt my method to the requirements of all classes of persons, so that everyone may find therein a practical means of continually dwelling in spirit in the wounds of Jesus Crucified; and thence deriving those innumerable spiritual blessings which are the fruits of our Saviour’s Passion.
It will be utterly useless for anyone to read this book solely for the sake of novelty, as it contains nothing but what may be found scattered over the pages of many other books of piety. Read it, on the contrary, O devout Christian, in a spirit of devotion, and with a sincere desire for the sanctificati
