This book is dedicated to mentors, teachers, and supervisors:
Sr. Theresa C. Brophy, ACPE Supervisor, and Rabbi Zahara Davidowitz-Farkas, MHL, BCJC, CPSP Diplomate Supervisor During my first unit of CPE, you both opened my eyes to the love of chaplaincy, and then during my year of residency, you inspired me to become the best chaplain possible.
Rev. George Handzo, MDiv, BCC, CSSBB, and Rev. Curtis W. Hart, MDiv, BCC, CPSP Diplomate Supervisor You both believed in me, encouraged me, and mentored me in ways too numerous to count.
Rabbi Ari Fridkis You continue to help me grow to my full potential. You are a living b rachah.
Rabbi Dr. Richard F. Address and Dr. Leonard M. Lodish When I dreamed of sacred service, you both encouraged me and helped open doors. It is truly the little things that can make such a big difference in the world.
R. E. Hellman, MD Without your continued support, love, and endless patience, none of my work in the field of chaplaincy over the past two decades would ever have been possible.

Introduction
Rabbi Stephen B. Roberts, MBA, MHL, BCJC
Why This Book Now?

Professional chaplaincy within the United States and Canada is rapidly evolving. Over the past ten years standards have been developed and published, the major chaplaincy organizations have hosted numerous joint Canadian / U.S. conferences and workshops, and the leaders of many of the organizations are now involved and work together across the United States and Canada.
The field has produced many great resources to help us move forward. This handbook / textbook developed out of numerous conversations I had at many recent chaplaincy conferences. A commonly repeated question was Is there one place I can turn to in my desire to learn about / keep current the basic skills that I need to do effective professional chaplaincy / spiritual / pastoral care-whether as a congregational clergy member, a seminarian, or a professional chaplain? Chaplains in particular were asking whether a single resource existed for learning and developing expertise in the newest areas of expected proficiency of a professional chaplain: quality improvement; strategic planning; research; developing and implementing tactical plans regarding who a chaplain should see; and outcome oriented chaplaincy. Educators-both CPE and seminary based-asked about a single current source for helping their students become familiar with core pastoral care skills.
The answer to all the previous questions, up until now, has been no. The field is rapidly professionalizing, and this resource is of that development. No other current resource similar to this handbook exists. The closest is Rabbi Dayle A. Friedman s Jewish Pastoral Care, 2nd Edition: A Practical Handbook from Traditional Contemporary Sources (Jewish Lights). This resource is a superb 201 -level text directed to a specific religious community. I strongly recomm
