Description

Following the 'compelling and powerful' Into the Flames comes Stephanie Jones' final steps towards completing her transition and embracing her true gender identity. Out of the Flamespicks up whereInto the Flamesleft off, describing the ups, downs, challenges and triumphs that transitioning presents. In many respects, it is the Yang toInto the Flames'Yin, the positive to the negative, the light to the dark.Reflecting on how a person adjusts and settles into a new gender role, Stephanie discusses the importance of offering help and guidance to those embarking on their own journeys of transition, and of passing on knowledge gained from her own experiences.Humorous and heartfelt in equal measure,Out of the Flamesis a story with hope at its core. Written from the perspective of anindividual who has successfully negotiated the NHS gender pathway, it aspires to show the reader that despite how dark and difficult things can get, there's always a way through, always a way to climb back up and start living a full and contented life.

Introduction
Well a second book, who would have thought? Not content with putting myself through the proverbial literary ringer just the once I’ve decided to set the dial to rinse and repeat and in doing so once again have allowed the cleansing and cathartic literary process to wash over those stains that stubbornly remained after completion of ‘Into The Flames.’
Those closet to me will know only too well how difficult and challenging the task proved to be last time, and they would certainly be justified in asking why on earth would I even contemplate revisiting such a bonkers idea! When asked this question I usually reply with a pretty simple answer … which is, I wasn’t finished, I definitely felt I had more to say! I often use the analogy of an onion to describe gender Dysphoria, peel an onion and you’ll discover fragile layer after fragile layer, being Transgender is very much the same, it’s such a multi layered aspect to a life, and oh another similarity is that at some point both of them are going to make you cry!
The first book was challenging enough and during its creation I found myself at times feeling very exposed and vulnerable, it was nothing if not an honest account, memories and emotions laid bare. But, I’m nothing if not a persistent and stubborn fool, so much so that in the intervening 18 months I’ve only gone and written another!
They do differ though and this one most certainly seeks to build upon the foundations of the first, naturally I’ve moved forward with my life and the topics discussed in this book reflect that progress and yes, despite the odd blip, it is definitely progress.
The first book primarily delved into the deeply unsettling and fracturing aspects of a seemingly stable life shattered by transition and detailed the subsequent upheaval and impact it had on myself and those I love the most. This one however seeks to focus on the new and more settled aspects that transition has brought to my door, describing the bedding in process and natural evolution a person goes though when literally starting over. I hope therefore that the overall tone of this book is one of positivity, achievement and balance, a calming and settling of stormy waters. Amongst many topics, I’ve discussed; the settling process of rebuilding a new life, the reforging and strengthening of family bonds, embracing acceptance, old and valued friendships, trips to the past, the world of employment and two significant surgical adventures that have both strengthened and affirmed my transitional foundations.
Of course this book wouldn’t be complete without splashes of slightly irreverent humour sprinkled throughout, a long career in the Fire Service will most certainly shape your outlook on life and has definitely led to my own and often particularly obtuse viewpoint on many of the Transgender related issues that the media and others currently appear to have such an interest in. My thoughts and observations are of course written from an unique “ World According To Stephy’ viewpoint and therefore some will no doubt match your own outlook and others certainly won’t, but hey isn’t that what being different and what life’s colourful adventure is all about! Each one of us is shaped and influenced by experiences particular to us, and that’s what makes us all a little different, okay some of us a lot different! But it’s also what produces free thinking individuals that walk their own path and as a result absolutely add to the diversity, richness and wonder of this often difficult world. Oh and please excuse me if some terms or thoughts I’ve written appear outdated or incorrect, trust me the Transgender World is nothing if not a dynamic, fast moving and ever evolving one, and as such it’s nigh on impossible to remain on message all the time, all of the time.
As with the first book every word was written with a spontaneity and honesty that I hope bridges the gap between author and reader, and once again from a safe distance, provides you with an insight into the crazy rollercoaster that is Transition. Oh and yes there are thirteen chapters in the book, apologies for that if your superstitious, but as Groucho Marx once said, “ The only thing a black cat crossing your path signifies… is that the animal has been somewhere and is now going somewhere else!” So thirteen it is and to again paraphrase the immortal Mr Marx “I definitely wouldn’t describe myself as Superstitious, but maybe just a little Stitious!”
Happy Reading

The words of my plastic surgeon … “In your case I’m going to skip plastic surgery and go straight to plastic explosives”
Opportunity Knocks
Stopping and pausing for a moment I gazed at the imposing black door of 54 Wimpole Street, behind me the cities people and traffic bustled by, intent on the days business, single minded and blinkered. Perpetually grinding through their ground hog day existences, seemingly immune to the intrusive smells, noises and city distractions which I always found so incessantly draining and tiring. London, a vitality vampire on a capital scale. But at that particular moment and despite its best disruptive efforts, the volume of London’s white noise had been dialled down until it was barely a murmur at the back of my mind, I was elsewhere, reflecting on a life journey that had once again brought me to these marble steps leading to the entrance of a clinic that had played such a significant and empowering part in my recent life.
It was the 9th Oct 2017 and I had first crossed its threshold fifteen months earlier when I was at the very start of an incredibly challenging but oh so rewarding transitional adventure. Today was going to be the final entry in that particular life ledger, the day I dotted the’s I’s and crossed the T’s, the long awaited conclusion to ‘Into The Fl
