Dr Peter Thein Nyunt holds vital roles in Myanmar as professor, strategist and one of Asia’s significant missiologists of the 21 st century. He skillfully integrates both theory and practice in his consistent ministry to the Rakhine people within his Buddhist nation. I commend Missions amidst Pagodas for its attempt to communicate Christ in indigenous ways within the Burmese Buddhist context. His careful cultural analysis will quicken thinking and stir creative intellectual juices. While some may not fully agree with his using nirvana as equivalent to biblical heaven, his discussions should be read thoughtfully and pondered intently. This is a refreshing and stimulating book.
Dr Alex G. Smith
Buddhist World Advocate, OMF International
This is such an important book—well-researched, cogently argued, clearly expressed. It should be read and studied by everyone who wishes to show the good news of Jesus with Buddhists in Myanmar.
Rev Dr David Harley
Former Principal of All Nations Christian College, UK

This should be a handbook for Christian organizations, churches and mission practitioners who are being engaged in Christian communication with the Buddhist world.
Rev Dr Mar Gay Gyi

and Myanmar Baptist Convention
My faithful co-worker, Dr Peter Thein Nyunt, has very rich experience in communicating the good news with our Buddhist brethren. His profound missiological insights in Missions amidst Pagodas are incredible. I recommend all disciples of Jesus Christ who have passion to communicate the gospel with the Buddhists should read this book.

Foreword
Effective communication of the gospel message in any cultural context is a complex and yet very crucial aspect of the ministry. Christian workers who venture to minister among people other than their own have to be equipped with specific insights, skills and tools for relevant contextual communication. Contextual communication of the gospel being a universal concern, scholars primarily from Europe and North America have attempted to provide specialized insights so as to enable missionaries to serve in the cross cultural context. Apparently, most of what was developed from the Western perspectives had been written with Western assumptions, having limited applicability for the non-western context. Although the “etic” perspective, which the Western scholars have provided in the field of communication has been perceived as a valuable contribution, the urgent need for developing an “emic” or insider’s perspective has been evident. Dr Peter Thein Nyunt’s Missions amidst Pagodas: Contextual Communication of the Gospel in the Burmese Buddhist Context is an attempt that takes into consideration the issue of contextual communication from “emic” or insider’s perspective. The author being a Rakhine Buddhist convert himself brings a significant amount of insider’s perspectives which are invaluable, but most importantly, being a former Buddhist monk, his perspective provides additional insights for effective contextual communication of the gospel to the Buddhist community in Myanmar.
Dr Peter Thein Nyunt is one of those few Asian scholars with a Buddhist background who have attempted to provide scholarly and contextually relevant ways for communicating the gospel in the Buddhist context. He has meticulously developed a relevant model for contextual communications among the Buddhists by studying communication theories, engaging with contemporary academic literature, taking into consideration the Buddhist background realities and combining his Buddhist background and insights. Further, he takes us through a journey of the Biblical, theoretical, historical and Burmese ways of contextual communication and provides a comprehensive perspective that certainly is helpful for effective communication of the gospel among the Buddhists.
It was my privilege to be Peter’s guide during his doctoral studies at South Asia Institute of Advanced Christian Studies, Bangalore. Throughout his time here at SAIACS, Peter passionately pursued his studies with a deep sense of commitment that demonstrated his profound interest and excitement in pursuing his research in the area of contextual communication of the gospel in the Buddhist context. Part of the reason for his excitement was the subject that he was researching was very close to his heart. I found him to be an exciting student who took his research and studies seriously so as to make the gospel communication contextually relevant for his own Buddhist people.
Those who are involved in ministry among the Buddhists will find this book to be informative,
