Because of its desire to make better known its jurisprudence, the Apostolic Signatura has welcomed the initiative of one of a new generation of serious students of Canon Law, Mr. William L. Daniel, Vice-Chancellor and Judge at the Diocesan Tribunal of the Diocese of Winona in the United States of America, to present a Latin-English edition of decisions and decrees of the Supreme Tribunal, which pertain to its various competencies. The volume which you have in your hands is the fruit of his steadfast and diligent labour, over many years. Although the volume remains exclusively the work of Mr. Daniel, the Apostolic Signatura has been pleased to assist him, to a limited degree, so that his work might present as faithfully as possible its jurisprudence. On his part, he has willingly and wholeheartedly received any observation offered by the Supreme Tribunal. Having studied the text, I commend and thank Mr. Daniel. At the same time, I express particular gratitude to His Excellency, the Most Reverend Frans Daneels, O.Praem., Secretary of the Apostolic Signatura, and the Very Reverend Monsignor Joseph R. Punderson, the Defender of the Bond at the Supreme Tribunal, who provided as much assistance to Mr. Daniel as was possible, given the demand and the weight of their daily responsibilities at the Apostolic Signatura. I also wish to thank Wilson & Lafleur Ltée of Montréal for its commitment to the publication of the volume in a most worthy edition, and to Professor Ernest Caparros, editor of the Gratianus Series, of which Ministerium Iustitiæ: Jurisprudence of the Supreme Tribunal of the Apostolic Signatura is now a significant part. Through the study of this volume, may the service of justice in the Church be fostered for the sake of the practice of charity. May it inspire in its readers the deeper understanding of justice in the Church, the minimum yet indispensable requirement of Christian charity.
