Description

Grounded in Christian love mysticism, Love's Oneing gives voice to the luminous consciousness that awakens from within our oneness in God in contemplation. With great sensitivity, the book offers nuanced insight into the marriage of kenosis and desire in contemplation, through the rich tapestry of writings from nine mystics: Julian of Norwich, the Cloud of Unknowing author, Meister Eckhart, Mechthild of Magdeburg, Clare of Assisi, John of the Cross, Teilhard de Chardin, Beatrice Bruteau and Ilia Delio. With the delicate eye of a spiritual director immersed in mystical literature, Kerrie Hide situates these mystical teachings within contemplative prayer, whilst offering a scholarly exploration of contemplative practice to embody the insights. Deeply grounded in traditional and contemporary mystical classics, Hide celebrates how the Christian mystical tradition lays a foundation for the evolutionary growth of communion consciousness and the insights of quantum science, highlighting key moments in contemplation that when surrendered into, open into divine love. Born of intellectual reflection, lived experience and contemplative wisdom, Love's Oneing makes a unique contribution to the existing literature on contemplation at a time when the recovery of the mystical dimension of life is crucial for the future of our planet in this climate crisis moment.

Thanking is a tender quality that pours forth from the heart of God. My gratitude flows to so many. I wish to thank my students who were so part of the creativity of the early years when I first began to explore the beauty of Julian’s Oneing. At the same time, I must thank my directees who are living this journey of oneing so deeply, so fully with so much love. Their luminous wisdom and insights into contemplation continues to enrich my life and indeed, the noosphere.
I am so grateful to Sr Joanne Fitzsimons OSC, Sr Madeline Duckett RSM, Sr Catherine Hefferan RSM, Sr Margaret Collis RSM, Sr Patty Andrew OSU, Sue Gesell, Rev Dr Sarah Bachelard and Fran Hegarty for encouraging me to write and make accessible the content of my retreats. They are so at home in love’s silence and live from these depths of contemplation.
And I must extend a special heartfelt thank you to Dr Robyn Fitzgerald, who spent many hours praying with these ponderings, sharing invaluable insights and assisting with editing, thus enabling the book to be completed. Our many conversations of the heart inspired the insights that were emerging to become words on the page. Finally, I am deeply grateful to my husband, Col, whose love is endlessly enriching.

May they be one.
John 17:21
Here is a book about contemplation — in which the soul is oned to God. 1
These opening words from the Cloud of Unknowing hold the essence of this book. My desire is to draw together the pattern of wisdom that has informed my ever-growing appreciation that we are one and in a relationship of oneing in God. The book seeks to shed light on how we become consciously aware, behold with a unitive, or oneing consciousness, and express the wisdom that arises from this oneing. The book is an interweaving of the wisdom of nine mystics from the Christian tradition that have helped continue to answer the original question of my life-long research on Julian of Norwich, that Julian asks at the end of her showings, “What was God’s meaning?” 2 The response she receives fills the universe with hope as she comes to behold and see: “Love is God’s meaning.” 3 Together, yet uniquely, Julian of Norwich, the Cloud of Unknowing author, Meister Eckhart, Mechthild of Magdeburg, Clare of Assisi, John of the Cross, Pierre Teilhard de Chardin, Beatrice Bruteau and Ilia Delio give us a glimpse of how the Christian contemplative tradition offers a luminous view of our oneness in God and potential for awakening a unitive, or oneing consciousness.
Each mystic offers us a multi-coloured palate of translucent metaphorical language, that arises from the silence of the ground of the heart and has its own distinctive nuanced way of describing mystical union, or oneing, and the transformation in consciousness that occurs through contemplation. Each author contributes to this overview of the Western Christian version of what is today called non-dual consciousness. Each shows how the practice of contemplative prayer imparts increasing union with God, that transforms consciousness from reliance on the cognitively dominated thinking of the conscious mind, to the unitive perceptivity, or what I call, a oneing-heart awareness. Each bequeaths some luxuriant colours that enable us to paint a multihued canvas of how, in Mechthild’s words, we are “written into the book of the Godhead, painted in our humanity,” 4 and are evolving in our capacity to see translucently from the core of our existence in Christ, in the Trinity of Love. Each seer takes us into the holomovement of the evolutionary flow of Love’s oneing, enfolding and unfolding in creation, until we realise the fullness of our oneness, behold, and truly see that the soul is indeed oned to God.
Placing us within the ground of our heart, and attuning our heart ways of knowing, to the point where Silence speaks the Word, not only within our own soul, but within the wholeness of creation, these mystics offer us a way of contemplation that awakens an abiding unitive heart, or oneing consciousness. I understand the term mystic to describe a person who experiences the presence of God, perceived in conscious awareness as either presence, or absence. 5 In this sense, we are all mystics. This book seeks to situate each of the mystics in her, or his cultural, historical environment, behold in the silence of open receptivity and ponder how each distinctively contributes to the rise of the consciousness of our intrinsic unity in the divine, in this twenty-first century. Critically, we will explore the complexifying of consciousness as articulated in these texts that assists us to live in the oneing consciousness of the Christ and contribute to the contemporary quest to enable non-dual consciousness to evolve. We will fine tune how to see, beholding blindly from within the oneness of our shared identity in Christ, in the Trinity of Love, in our time.
In her celebrated book, the Unbearable Wholeness of Being , the contemporary mystic, Ilia Delio highlights how we are at a crossroad in understanding the implications of our wholeness in God, and t
