About the Author
Dedication

T his book is dedicated to my wife, Willette Phillips, whose assistance in proofreading has made my work more presentable and more readable. It has not been easy for me when she has reminded me that if you are going to write it, you need to try to live it. I have often said to others, “If you are going to preach it, you can expect an opportunity to live it.” She heard me say that many times, but I had no idea that she was paying attention. Now, when I write it, she gives me an opportunity to live it. Anyway, proofreading my work and proofreading my life has kept her quite busy. Her devoted Bible study has contributed to the accuracy of reference placement and use. For the past three years while I have not been able to stand or walk, she has provided constant attention to my needs, and has helped me to keep going when the going was not easy. She is a good wife and mother, and a super grandmother. She is admired by all who know her for her consistent faithfulness and devotion. She is more than just a Christian, she is a believer.
Preface

T hrough the news media, we have learned that we may escape the frustratingly impossible struggle of trying to live up to the requirements of fundamental Christian faith by joining--can you believe it?--”Fundamentalist Anonymous”. At first, I thought the idea was ridiculous. After thinking about it, I realized that the idea is marketable in the worldly society in which we live. Actually, it dawned on me that I had started this book based upon the same premise that leads someone to found a support group for people who are failing in the struggle. It is impossible to live the Christian life within our own capabilities and strength, and trying to do so is wearing down many sincere and uninformed people. A person can be devastated by the stress caused when the demands of Christian living are matched against human effort.
It is essential that we exercise the access that God gives for spiritual growth in Him. Within our own strength, we are not in any way capable or prepared to win the struggles of faith in the arena of human existence. Through the God-given means available to us, we must reject the world’s ways and accept God’s ways. It is absolutely necessary that believers separate from the world. It is essential that believers be able to sharply contrast the world’s ways of living with living in God’s alternative society . A good starting point would be to make sure that your church has not brought the world into the church. If that has happened, get out as quickly and quietly as possible.
Believers need to get their heads into their religion; and their religion into their heads. For some reason, we have come to believe that our Christian faith is just a religion of the heart; and through this belief we have been misguided about the role of the mind in our relationship with God. Thus, many believers are in the miserable condition created when one tries to live with a Christian “heart” and a “worldly” mind. The first and greatest commandment includes loving God with all your mind (Matthew 22:37-38).
In spite of professed faith in Jesus Christ, many believers are living with fear, despair, defeat, doubt, depression, indecision, and a myriad of mind-related or mind-produced problems. Is it any wonder that we are frustrated? Is it any wonder that the world is confused about the meaning of Christianity for modern life? The Christian witness is diluted and invalidated by what the world sees in our lives; and we go on failing to seek and apply God’s solutions. Our present condition can be attributed primarily to three general failures: 1) gross neglect of concern for renewing of the mind, 2) attempting to apply the world’s solutions, and 3) ignoring or failing to apply the solutions that God has provided in His Word.
As usual, the world is offering counterfeit solutions. Scores of mind development programs are being promoted in the market place. Most of this material is not appropriate for successful Christian living, because it is couched in humanistic philosophies. None of it puts forth a solution to the sin problem, which is the real source of our troubles. There are thousands of clinics, treatment centers, and individuals practicing the world’s arts of mind-healing, but very few of these are based on anything that would even come close to what is taught in God’s Word. Most of them are based upon philosophies and practices that have been developed and promoted by anti-God humanists. Their evolutionist views treat man as just another animal.
The sad thing is that many Christian leaders, including some dedicated and well-meaning preachers, have not only bought into this humanistic approach, but are ardently promoting it by teaching the world’s ways of coping. We should stop this nonsense of trying to teach Christians to cope. Coping is one of the fundamental tenets and practices of humanistic philosophy and religion. In my opinion, cope is one the dirtiest four-letter words used by respectable people. Coping is simply an attempt to “handle things” without God. It is alien to Christian thought. Christ conquered; in Christ, believers conquer.
One of the great challenges of churches today is to honestly face the failure to instruct Christians in the realm of mind-related spiritual needs. Failure to act decisively on this critical issue will condemn many believers to continued failure and mental torment in their lives, and render them absolutely incapable of becoming effective witnesses for the Lord. To find and apply the solutions in God’s Word will make victorious Christian living a reality, and will turn the Church into the triumphant witness God intends it to be. What the world needs is to see churches filled with radiant, vibrant, victorious Christians, who have discovered transforming power in the renewing of the mind God’s way.
Introduction

T he purpose of this book is to lead Christians to experience the life-changing power of God’s solutions to life’s problems. No one knows all of God’s solutions, but we are wise to apply those that He reveals to us. I believe God will transform our lives, if we will refuse to conform to the world, and choose His will. His will is Christ living in us. Through the Word and the power of the Holy Spirit, it is possible to have Him living in us. When He lives in us, we can successfully live in His alternative society, the place for Spirit-led living.
Bible-based, spiritual principles and strategies have been offered for overcoming the stress and defeat caused by trying to live a Christian life in one’s own power and ability. Believers must face some realities. One of those realities is the fact that trying to live the Christian life on your own can make you crazy. Another reality is that coping strategies based upon humanistic thinking will destroy you. Another reality is that the gospels of materialistic success are trap doors based upon Satan’s deception. Another reality is that some of the “kingdom now” theology is dangerous and likely to bring false victories. Another reality is that you must get help, or you will drown in defeat. The reality that I most want to share is that He is the victory, and through His Word, we can find His victory
