Story Retold By: Dr. Reeta Peshawaria Menon and Anu Peshawaria Edited by Dr. Amrita Bahl © Junior Diamond www.juniordiamond.com
It is, perhaps, rare that one hears of younger sisters writing about their older one, who according to them, made history.
This is a story of our sister, Kiran Bedi, nee' Peshawaria, who became the first woman to join the officer ranks of the Indian Police Service on 16th July, 1972.
The Peshawaria Family. Top row from L to R: Prakash Peshawaria (Father), Shashi (Eldest daughter), Kiran (Second daughter), Prem (Mother). Bottom row from L to R: Anu (Youngest daughter), Reeta (Third daughter)

We, four of us, were born to visionary parents, Prakash & Prem Peshawaria. They were clearly ahead of their time in their belief that a daughter's future is in her education, while other parents focused on marrying off daughters with hefty dowries. Even as a child, Kiran always stood out not only in the family but also among children in the neighborhood.
Growing up as a close-knit family, not only did we play together, study together or train together, we also travelled together very often. Over the years, we saw our sister Kiran being asked some questions repeatedly. Parents, teachers and students are very keen to know about her formative years. Hence, we decided to address this so that the millions of people she inspires today, get to know more about her.
She has been repeatedly asked: How were you groomed? What is your family background? What was your inspiration? What made you so bold and forthright? Who are your role-models? Why did you join the police service? Did your parents ever miss having a son? How did you deal with boys teasing you? What does success mean to you? How did you combine sports, academics and a host of other creative activities? How did you handle defeat? What kind of food do you eat? How did you learn to be so courageous and decisive at an early age? What were your dreams while growing up? How did you manage your time? What did you read when you were small? And what did you do differently that made you a legend in your lifetime? And more…
It is our endeavor to address some of these questions to continue to inspire the coming generations who want to learn from her experiences.
The How of this book:
Since we were a tennis playing family, and competing and travelling all over the country, our father had a habit of curating newsclips and photos of fond memories. Kiran inherited this habit, thus making our task easier to present this illustrative story of her life.
This is a series documenting Kiran Bedi's life before her years in the khaki 1 , during her years in the khaki and beyond her years in the khaki.

Making Of The Top Cop
Four of us were born in the Holy city of Amritsar, famous for the Golden Temple, Durgiana Temple, Jallianwala Bagh and more.
Belonging to an interfaith family, we grew up with frequent visits to the Holy places with our parents.
