The Role of Acids in Homeopathy

As the 21 st century dawns we are clearly about to witness one of the most crucial changes in the history of man.

Traditional fossil fuels – like coal, oil and natural gas – which have propelled such major advances in so many fields of human progress over the past two centuries will be replaced by clean, renewable fuels – like hydrogen.

Hydrogen has already been harnessed in America as a source of power not only for use in the factory, but also in the home. Within the automobile industry millions of dollars are being invested to develop hydrogen-powered cars, buses and lorries. And just as hydrogen is applicable to modern science and engineering, it is also in line with modern developments in homeopathic field.

It was a German doctor, Samuel Hahnemann, who first experimented with the therapeutic methods which were to become the medical discipline known as homeopathy today. 200 years later its use and applications are still being refined and developed and it now has a huge – and growing – following, due to its safe, risk-free treatments which have been shown to give extraordinary results.

Every day researchers and doctors are making new discoveries, testing them on themselves and finding new remedies from natural substances resulting in all sorts of new and exciting cures. In the language of homeopathy this type of experiment is known as ‘proving’ – where the effects of a new substance on the healthy body are initially recorded and catalogued according to their symptomatic characteristics. This therapeutic product can then be prescribed to cure a sick patient displaying identical symptoms.

Hydrogen has been the basis of recent proving, and we now have its complete list of symptoms, collected, under clinical conditions, from healthy subjects.

The homeopathic remedies coming from the acid family are linked, in that their chemical formulae are all based on hydrogen, most usually also sharing a mineral radical. Our knowledge of the comprehensive effects of hydrogen leads to an understanding of how individual acids work, and thus to exciting, new, successful methods of treatment.

This book seeks to trace a path through the opportunities and complexities lying within the acid family, using well-documented case histories and clinical studies. This group of homeopathic medicaments and their remarkable diversity of application gives immense new scope to homeopathic doctors and pediatricians in numerous fields, and indicates just how much there is still for us to discover from nature. As the chapters unfold, the astonishing breadth of this new area of treatment will become apparent, as we explore this ‘Happy Family’ of acids.

Common Characteristics of Acids

We should start by summarising the simple clinical characteristics that form the ‘profile’ of the acid family, so that we can identify them easily and quickly, and prescribe the correct treatments.
Common Clinical Characteristics of Acids 1
Simple visible signs and indications
*  Common Symptoms
The following symptoms relate to the typical acid characteristics that burn, irritate and weaken patients :
- CAUSTICITY : all acids burn the skin and the respiratory system when inhaled
- FEEBLENESS AND IRRITABILITY : again, through inhalation, acids affect and poison the nervous system
- HAEMORRHAGING : acids often cause bleeding, from the burning
- MUSCULAR WEAKNESS : linked to the enfeebling properties of acidity
- LEUCORRHOEA AND IRRITANTS : more likely in women and girls
- BREATHLESSNESS AND COUGHING : again, from acid inhalation
- DIARRHOEA : linked to the acidification of the digestive tract. A very frequent symptom
*  Other less typical symptoms of acid intoxication
- Deafness : relating to the central nervous system
- Hairloss : a sign of general weakness and asthenia
- Symptoms aggravated by coffee

When all or some of these symptoms are identified, acid treatment is almost certainly required.
Acidosis
To understand the physiology of acids one must be able to recognise the chemical phenomenon of acidosis, measured on the PH scale.

1/ Acidosis occurs two ways :
a) Excess carbonic acid : in cases of pulmonary deficiency, with shortness of breath and coughing. It is a dangerous condition ; well recognised in traditional medicine, and needs urgent treatment

b) Deficit of bases 2 :
* In cases of severe diarrhoea (as with cholera) acidity accompanies collapse and serious asthenia. Acidosis can also follow vomiting.
* After intensive muscular exercise. Acidosis can also be identified in muscular depletion, and where there is accumulation of lactic acid in the muscle, accompanied by aching, stiffness and muscular atony.

2/ Acidosis compensation develops quickly within the organism :
* Firstly by the expulsion of carbonic acid from the lungs, recognisable through shortness of breath and coughing
* Ammonia is eliminated by the kidneys and urine becomes ammoniacal to combat excess acidity.

In addition to these identifiable corrective physiological phenomena, there is often a build-up of carbon dioxide in the brain at the expense of vital oxygen, which results in intense fatigue and asthenia.
Homeopathic Characteristics Common to all Acids
It was the Dutch homeopathic physician, Dr. Yann Scholten 3 , who is credited with discovering the characteristic that is unique and common to all acids – namely their need for unity and fusion. The basis of his findings and rationale are discussed below, with the applications, all of which have proved extraordinarily useful in prescribing acid remedies.
* THE NEED FOR UNITY AND UNITY OF CONSCIENCE
It is clear that patients with acid-related problems either see the world as very much a united whole, or vehemently wish it to be so, yearning for unity.
They are in a kind of foetal state – having no concept of division or distinction. This desire for unity was recently discussed in some detail by Jeremy Sherr 4 whilst describing his experimentation with hydrogen, and we shall be exploring these details and implications further, later in this book.

We start with the knowledge that all acids are compounds based on the hydrogen radical (H), frequently linked to a mineral radical (chlorine, bromide etc…)
* THEY ARE AT ONE WITH THE WORLD, THROUGH LOVE
This sense of oneness and need for fusion can be expressed as a form of eroticism, even amongst children. Erotic leanings can also be transferred into strong religious adhesions, where unity with religious communities exists. Such patients are often attracted to mysticism, and Buddhism. They feel the presence of God at an intense level, and, through their heightened awareness reach a state of happiness, even ecstasy, where everything in the world seems to them wonderful and magnificent. They are strong idealists.
* THE NEED FOR UNITY NOW, FOREVER, TOTALLY, COMPLETELY
They are seekers after absolute truth  : they need to know why things are as they are. They are often doctors or researchers, and if scientifically-oriented they tend towards theories about the universe, trying to establish links and interdependencies within and between universal phenomena.

They are simple purists  : often naïve, with a natural, unaffected vision of the world – idealists.

They link their natural simplicity with an ever-present sense of eternity : The notion of time means nothing to them, they live in the present, for the present, today is eternal – Carpe Diem. If anything, time passes too slowly.

They suffer from a sense of isolation and exhaustion if/when their quest for unity fails. This leads to feelings of rejection, marginalisation from the world and separation from their family, resulting in fear, emptiness, exclusion and the misery of feeling utterly lost. The world they live in has become their personal hell and their minds are invaded by thoughts of death, crime and enmity. They become exhausted, as they exhaustively search and research on a seemingly hopeless quest.
* LOSS OF STRENGTH/EXHAUSTION
This is a key symptom and can relate to both physical and mental energy, which is why acids are frequently prescribed for sportsmen and marathon runners.
* HYPERACTIVITY
Hyperactive behaviour usually precedes exhaustion. It is typical of acid patients to use up their energy reserves hustling and bustling at the multitude of busy tasks they undertake uncomplainingly, with the frenzy of zealots.
* EXTROVERSION AND LIVELINESS
These are active achievers ; perfectionists who push themselves to the limits to reach their goals, sometimes even too far, to a state of exhaustion. They also appear to have a highly charged sexual drive.
* AGRESSION
Aggression here is linked to action and high activity and can lead to somatic symptoms like aphta, ulcers and fissures.
* PSYCHOSIS
This state involves mental confusion and dizziness in patients who let go of reality. They lose track of who they are, where they are going, what they are doing, or even whether they are really here at all.

These signs all relate to acids, with the central defining symptom in all patients of that ceaseless, strength-sapping struggle for unity. With our modern lifestyles so increasingly defined by stress, separation and suffering, it becomes more and more vital
