FOREWORD
The great Doctor of the Church St. Alphonsus Liguori has enriched spiritual literature, among his other compositions, with a short, charming Italian poem about the Will of God. Every stanza of this mystical jewel ends with the exclamation:
Quanto degna sei d'amore, O Divina Volonta! How lovable thou art, O Holy Will of God!
These simple but seraphic words are an accurate expression, not only of the very core of the soul of St. Alphonsus, but of the feelings of all Saints of God on earth and in Heaven.
There never was a Saint and never can be one whose attitude toward the Divine Will is lukewarm, since love of the Will of God constitutes the very essence of sanctity.
Instinctively, every fervent soul who takes its sanctification seriously feels attracted to the Holy Will of God, and sooner or later develops a real devotion to this Holy Will.
Any kind of perfection or sanctity which is not closely related to the Will of God, and does not result in increasing love of the Divine Will, should be branded as superficial, doubtful, if not illusory.
Real and profound devotion to God's Holy Will is always the fruit of earnest and persevering endeavor, of continual prayer and of a very abundant grace of the Holy Spirit. Many souls called to perfection never attain that supreme goal of the spiritual life, since they lack the courage to cooperate with the grace of God. Indeed, it takes enormous courage to embrace—always and everywhere—in all details of life, the Holy Will of God.
At the same time, however, tender love toward the Divine Will is a guarantee of celestial peace and happiness. Yea, this love is the only way to genuine and permanent happiness.
These and similar reasons have prompted the author to publish the present treatise.
He humbly entreats his Holy Father Alphonsus to obtain for him and for all readers of this booklet—through the intercession of Mary Immaculate and through the infinite merits of Jesus—a seraphic love toward the Holy Will of God.
Jesus, Mary, Joseph, Alphonsus — deign to assist my poor endeavors!

THE SPIRIT OF THE WICKED WORLD
Life on earth seems charming, particularly to younger people who have not as yet been made acquainted with failures, trials, mishaps and sufferings. With time, however, all children of the world are disappointed in their hunt for true happiness. They realize the indubitable fact that there are more thorns than roses in human life.
At least ninety-nine percent of the worldlings feel discontented, and many of them are utterly unhappy. Why? Because they have taken the wrong road to happiness.
What is the spirit of the world? What is the leading idea of its life and strivings? An easy-going existence, absolute freedom in every regard, complete independence, even from God and His eternal laws. In other words, man wants to be like God . . . in a wrong sense.
Meanwhile, peace and happiness are in store for man in humble submission to the eternal, immutable, infinitely adorable Will of his Creator. To tread the road to happiness, man must recognize his true condition, which is one of absolute dependence on God, and consequently, of complete dependence on God's representatives on earth, as well. To feel and to see things otherwise means to put oneself in a false position, and thus to deprive oneself of real happiness.
Freedom?. . .Yes—man can and should have it as far as it proves essential to permanent happiness. All depends, however, upon the kind of freedom he covets. If he insists upon his alleged right to follow his natural inclinations, his likes and dislikes in everything, though he knows and feels that his nature is more prone to evil than to good, then he gradually draws away from God, the eternal source of true happiness. The only kind of freedom that becomes Christians and results in real happiness is the "freedom of the children of God." It means freedom—real, perfect freedom—within the limits of Divine law, Divine Will.
Alas, the vast majority of mankind discard this genuine freedom since it is connected with self-control, with many acts of self-denial, and with solid virtue. They prefer unlimited freedom, not excepting the freedom to offend God. Is it a wonder, then, that peace and happiness have almost completely disappeared from our earth, so as to make it a real valley of tears?
Godless people are wont to complain that human life is only too often like Hell. They fail, however, to explain that they themselves are building and shaping that earthly hell, while revolting against the Maker of Heaven and earth and disregarding His commandments, insulting His Infinite Majesty or even denying His very existence. Yes, earthly life undoubtedly is a clear prelude to Hell, once people forget their Father in Heaven, since there is no perfect justice here below and never will be, on account of the basic imperfection of human nature, and much more as a result of Original Sin.
We hear at times about the "mystery of evil" on earth. Indeed, there is so much bad will in human souls, such general wickedness in mankind, as to make us wonder again and again about these regrettable dispositions of the human heart. Why are most people so blind as to obstinately follow their bad inclinations and passions, though experience has taught them so often that this is not the way to real happiness? Why do some people revolt against God in such an insolent manner as to resemble Satan and his followers? Can they delude themselves that peace and happiness will be found in opposition to the Almighty Creator? Do they not know, or at least surmise—if they are unbelievers or ignorant people—that soon, upon crossing the threshold of eternity, they will have to face the infinite justice of God's tribunal?
How pitiable the future fate of sinners! Instead of the absolute, unlimited freedom they were demanding and pursuing on earth, they will find in eternity the most excruciating bondage. For, Hell is a prison, the most terrible prison, in comparison with which earthly penitentiaries seem like comfortable, delightful apartments. Followers of the wicked world! Why are you so thoughtless and unreasonable?
In the face of that deplorable wickedness of the world which consists essentially in revolt against the Holy Will of God, souls of good will should all the more beware of every shadow of opposition against the Divine Will. Let us be rather suspicious of everything that originates in the wicked world. Certainly, no one, not even religious souls who live in the seclusion of a convent, are immune from the poisoned spirit of the world.
The mere fact of living in this wicked world is not dangerous in itself, since Divine grace can enable a soul to serve God faithfully and even to attain a high degree of sanctity, in the midst of sinners, and in the very atmosphere of Hell. What exposes souls to the greatest peril is their light-mindedness, their naive and thoughtless trust in modern opinions, in fashionable theories. Only too often people forget about the maxim that "not all that glitters is gold."

THE SPIRIT OF SELF-WILL MAY INVADE RELIGIOUS COMMUNITIES
Religious souls are not of this world. In consequence of their profession they belong entirely to God, and bear the title and dignity of spouses of Jesus Christ. They are living, however, in the
