Preface
T he word angel comes from the Greek word angelos , which means messenger. Angels are referenced throughout the Old and New Testaments. They worship God and serve Him in many capacities. As ministers of God, they assist His people by providing protection and deliverance from danger. They can facilitate communication between God and His people via encouragement, revelations, and visions. They may act to guide and strengthen us. In certain instances, God may utilize angels to answer our prayers. They care for believers in their final moments on earth as they transition to the afterlife.
First responders have a unique opportunity to assist people in moments of crisis when they walk along a tightrope between heaven and earth. Sometimes, angels carry patients away to their ultimate destination. Other times, first responders may witness miracles in which people are protected and delivered from danger.
I ve been blessed to volunteer as an emergency medical technician for more than 30 years and to work as a physical therapist for more than 25. Help from Heaven relates inspirational calls from my years on the rescue squad with biblical passages about angels. This book will explore the quiet ways our guardian angels may be close by our side in emergency situations.

The Veteran s Second Chance
L ORD my God, I called to you for help, and you healed me .
You, L ORD , brought me up from the realm of the dead; you spared me from going down to the pit .
PSALM 30:2-3
T he movie was quite enthralling, but now Lou Woodward was regretting that he and his wife, Carol, had gone. They d had to park far from the theater, which hadn t seemed like a big deal before the movie, but by the time Lou got to the car after it was over, he was beginning to feel a tightening in his chest. I wish I hadn t forgotten my nitroglycerin pills at home .
We really should get a handicapped placard. Between my hips and your bad heart, we certainly qualify, Carol said. Lou had suffered from angina for the past six years, and Carol had struggled with arthritis for about the same amount of time. They both knew she would have to get total hip replacements within the next year or two, but she was trying to put them off for as long as possible.
No way are we getting handicapped plates. You know how I feel about that. That would mean we re getting old. Just the same, I think you d better drive home, honey. I feel a bit out of breath. Lou plopped onto the passenger seat of their sedan, clicked his seat belt, and closed his eyes. Just focus on taking nice, easy breaths. The chest pain will ease up, and I ll be home and able to take a nitro pill in 20 minutes .
Okay, but you are so stubborn about those handicapped tags. We are getting old, and you wouldn t be nearly so short of breath if you didn t have to walk so far. Carol put the car into gear and pointed it toward their home in Pine Cove, a beautiful seaside resort town on the East Coast.
Maybe you re right. I ll think about it.
Are you feeling okay, Lou? The fact that you re even considering those plates is scaring me, considering how dead set against them you are. Carol shot a concerned look at her husband, noting his pale, sweaty skin.
I m okay. Please just get me home. Lou briefly leaned his head against the passenger window before shifting it back to the headrest again. This feels worse than my usual angina pains .
Carol picked up the pace as Lou requested, edging her foot down on the accelerator. They both lapsed into a worried silence.
Lou was relieved when Carol pulled onto their driveway and nosed the car into the attached garage. He pushed open his car door and tried to swing his legs out, but they simply wouldn t cooperate. He suddenly found himself too weak to budge. I think I d better rest for a minute. Could you please run in and get my nitro?
Carol rushed inside (as fast as a person with two arthritic hips could rush) and hurried back with Lou s small, dark-brown nitro container. She fished out a pill for him and watched as he placed it under his tongue. I hope it helps. I m really getting nervous. I don t think I can get you inside by myself. I m not as strong as I used to be.
A few minutes passed, but Lou s chest still felt tight. It s getting harder and harder for me to get air into my lungs . I think I ll try to stand up again. He used his arms to help swing his legs out of the car. Once his feet were on the ground, he pushed with all his might to stand up. However, he rose only a few inches before sinking down onto his seat again.
I don t like this one bit. I m going inside and calling the police department. They ll send us help.
Lou grunted in agreement and closed his eyes.

DISPATCHER : Request for first aid at 417 Hanover Road in the garage for a 77-year-old man with chest pains and difficulty breathing.
I initially joined the first aid squad back when I was in high school, more than 30 years ago. At the time I spent summers working as an office clerk at the beach. One hot summer day, Alec Waters, a special officer (aka beach cop) who volunteered with the Pine Cove First Aid and Emergency Squad, convinced me to join. I continued to answer calls during my college years (when I spent summers working as a special officer) and postgraduate years (while I studied to become a physical therapist). I feel blessed that I ve been able to continue serving my community to this day, answering more than
