The Great Commission

Jesus once declared “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, even to the end of the age” (Matthew 28:18-20). Powered by the Holy Spirit in us, we are Christ’s witnesses throughout the whole earth (Acts 1:8). We’ve counted the cost (Luke 14:28) and are following Him with joyful abandon. We’ve given up on seeking our own dreams and desires, and have surrendered our lives to Him (Matthew 16:24).
After all, He purchased us with His own blood (1 Corinthians 6:19-20). We’re blood-bought children of the King (John 1:12-13), commissioned to invite others to join the family. We’re all about making the good news of Jesus’ death for our sins, His burial and His Resurrection known to all nations (1 Corinthians 15:1-4). We’re going to do business for the King until He comes (Luke 19:13), and continue proclaiming “Here am I. Send me” (Isaiah 6:8).
Although God created a perfect world (Genesis 1:31), the first humans, Adam and Eve, sinned against God (Genesis 3:5-6). Since then, humanity has been under the power of sin and death (John 8:34; Romans 3:23; Romans 6:23). Well, God promised to send a Savior (Genesis 3:15), a King that would rule forever (Isaiah 9:7). This Savior and King is Jesus. Before establishing His Kingdom in its fullness, He died for our sins (Isaiah 53:5), making a way for us to serve in His Kingdom (Colossians 1:13). The King gave His life for us, so we could live for Him (1 Corinthians 6:19-20). That’s what life is about. Let’s tell the world.
Of course, Jesus said “Do unto others as you would have others do unto you” (Luke 6:31). So, we should keep some questions in mind when talking to other people about Christ. First, we should ask “What do you mean?” We never want to assume what someone thinks, even if we think we know what they believe. From there, we can ask “How do you know?” If someone doesn’t really know if what they believe is true, why should that person believe it? Next, it’s always helpful to politely ask “What if you’re wrong?” If there’s a chance someone is wrong about why we’re here, and Jesus is right about eternity, it’s a good idea to give Him a look.
Finally, “Always be ready to give an answer to every man who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you, with gentleness and fear” (1 Peter 3:15). Rejoice in the Lord (1 Thessalonians 5:16), pray constantly (1 Thessalonians 5:17), give thanks (1 Thessalonians 5:18) and do everything in love (1 Corinthians 16:14). God is for us, who can be against us? (Romans 8:31)
The Why Question

Talking Points

*There are two explanations for how we got here. If evolution is true, there’s no God. I know, most biology teachers try to dance around this, but let’s be real. If the universe created itself completely through natural processes, an eternal, all-powerful Creator doesn’t exist.
*Naturally, if there’s no God, there’s no sin. After all, what’s right and wrong would be left up to personal opinion, not God’s standard of right and wrong. On top of that, it there’s no sin, there’s no reason for Jesus’ death on the Cross. So, evolution teaches that Christianity is nonsense.
*On the other hand, if the biblical account of creation is true, the God of the Bible exists. This means we’re not here to pass our genes on to the next generation and serve our own desires, like evolution teaches.
*Quite the opposite, we’re here to love God with all of our heart, soul, mind and strength, and serve Him by loving others (Mark 12:29-31). He died for us, so we live for Him (2 Corinthians 5:15).
*Ultimately, we’re either rearranged pond chemicals or we’re children of God (Acts 17:28-29). Clearly, what you believe about how we got here influences what you believe about why we’re here.
*The Bible says “Rejoice always. Pray without ceasing. In everything give thanks, for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you” (1 Thessalonians 5:16-18). Christ-followers have been delivered from the power of darkness to serve Christ in His Kingdom (Colossians 1:13), and the Kingdom is all about righteousness, peace and joy in the Holy Spirit (Romans 14:17).

Discussion Questions

Why are you here?

Common Objections

“Why are there so many different religions?”
God has revealed Himself through creation (Romans 1:18-20) and through our consciences (Romans 2:12-16), so why are there a bunch of different religions? The Bible says that although people “knew God, they did not honor Him as God or give thanks, but they became futile in their speculations, and their foolish heart was darkened” (Romans 1:20-21 NASB). Indeed, “they exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator” (Romans 1:25 NASB). Unfortunately, instead of honoring God, people tend to make their own gods. Yet, there is only one way to God, and Jesus said “I am the way” (John 14:6 KJV).

Evolution

Talking Points

*There are two kinds of science. Experimental science involves doing experiments in the present and drawing conclusions. Historical science involves piecing together what happened in the past. Since history doesn’t repeat itself, explanations about the past require assumptions.
*Evolution is a theory of history. It is based on the assumption that matter is all there is. Of course, if this were true, all of our so-called ‘thoughts’ would be the result of chemical reactions in the brain. They’d be chemically sound, not logically sound. Why trust them to be true?
*Speaking of trust, evolutionists believe that nothing created matter. This violates the First Law of Thermodynamics, which states matter and energy can’t be created or destroyed. No one saw this happen, and it can’t be recreated in a lab, so evolutionists accept this happened by blind faith.
*Incidentally, everything that has a beginning has a cause. What caused nothing to create matter in spite of scientific law? Often, the answer is chance, but chance doesn’t cause things to happen. That’s a lot like telling a teacher that chance made you forget to turn in your homework. Besides, luck isn’t a very “scientific” explanation for the universe’s existence.
*Regardless, evolution claims that non-living chemicals created a living organism. Yet, this violates the Law of Biogenesis, which states that life can only come from life. If a scientific law says living organisms can only come from other living organisms, how did non-living chemicals turn into a living organism?
*Likewise, natural selection supposedly made this single-celled organism more complex. Curiously, natural selection does the exact opposite of what evolution requires. Over time, it gets rid of genetic information, because genes which aren’t passed on are eliminated from a population. Since natural selection reduces existing genetic information, how could a one-celled organism become more complex?
*Well, mutations don’t help the case for evolution. They create new, sometimes beneficial traits by corrupting existing genetic information, but they don’t create new information. For instance, a mutation that produced the loss of wings for beetles on a windy island would be helpful. The problem? The beetle’s loss of wings is a loss of genetic information.
*That said, if an asexual organism turned into a human over time, where did sex come from? The asexual organism would’ve had to develop male and female sexual reproductive organs at the same time, because you can’t have one gende
