Introduction
This book brings together prayers about friends, enemies and relationships. There are also prayers pertaining to daily life and to particular moments and places.
Most of the prayers are written in inclusive language, although for some writers exclusive words still have a positive and significant meaning in their relationship with God. Neither our use of language nor our relationship with God is static; God-words and the words of our prayers will always be fluid.
There are strong thoughts and words in some of these prayers. Saying what we mean to God is more honest than tiptoeing around the issues and concerns we find disturbing or difficult. To write with integrity is to write within the traditions of the writers of the psalms. There is also much wisdom and humour in these prayers, and the challenging clarity of children’s conversations with God.
There are three prayer-writing workshops included in this book. These are based on experience of working with groups to write poems and prayers for private and public use:
•    A Haiku Prayer Workshop is an introduction to short prayer writing, which can be enjoyed by participants of all ages.
•    Writing Personal Prayers is an experimental workshop encouraging creativity and reflection.
•    A Workshop on Writing Intercessory/Bidding Prayers is included, as these are the prayers that lay people are most often asked to contribute to public worship.
My thanks are due to all the contributors who wrote prayers for this book. I also want to thank Lindsay Gray, Jan Sutch Pickard and class teachers who encouraged children to write; Bernadette and Peter Askins and Linda and David Bosworth for proof reading; and Yvonne Morland for sharing with me her experience of running creative writing workshops. I am grateful to the Wild Goose Publications team: Sandra, Jane, Neil, Alex and Tri, for all their encouragement, professionalism and support.
I have greatly enjoyed compiling and editing this book. I hope it will be a useful prayer and worship resource, and an encouragement to both individuals and congregations to be creative and courageous in their prayers.
Friends

Today and tomorrow
Give us bread and friends today,
seeds and stories tomorrow,
love and laughter
for ever and ever.
Joy Mead
Companions on the road
God, we thank you
for the companionship of friends,
and for encounters with strangers;
and the discovery that there are other folk –
saints and sinners like ourselves –
willing to follow you. Amen
Jan Sutch Pickard
Friendship
God, friend and lover of all,
thank you for the wonders of friendship.
For exasperation and encouragement,
irritation and delight,
ear
