About The Author
Mission Accomplished

When thou passest through the waters, I will be with thee; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow thee: when thou walkest through the fire, thou shalt not be burned; neither shall the flame kindle upon thee. For I am the Lord thy God, the Holy One of Israel, thy Saviour: I gave Egypt for thy ransom, Ethiopia and Seba for thee. Since thou wast precious in my sight, thou hast been honourable, and I have loved thee: therefore will I give men for thee, and people for thy life. (Isaiah 43:2-4)

My family’s obituary could have been written for Friday, July 16, 2004, all four of us—my husband, my daughter, and my son. Of course, my last child would never have been born since he was delivered four years later, but God is in control!

Approximately a week before, my husband Ronald called me at home and asked me to come meet him in order to see a car that he found at a great price and appeared to be in excellent condition. I could hear the excitement in his voice and knew that he wanted to buy it. The truth is, he was just seeking my approval. Since we desperately needed another vehicle, I got in my car and drove to see it. Of course, he got my attention when he mentioned that the car was a BMW. I owned a 2001 Nissan Altima (and still do) and was happy with it. However, if we could replace his with a “healthy” BMW without having a monthly bill, this would be a good thing. My husband also told me of the seller’s credentials when he spoke to me over the phone, to give the potential deal some credibility, I guess. It was a Sunday afternoon, and he agreed it was worth the risk and that he would take it to a mechanic after purchasing it. I was not too fond of its tan color, but it was a BMW, and a pretty good looking one, so we bought it.

On Monday, Ronald took care of the legal aspect of the purchase, including transferring the insurance from his old car to the new. He drove the vehicle that whole week. On Friday, he picked up the kids from school and parked the vehicle in front of our two-car driveway, next to his other car. That same day, I attended a seminar that was required by the State in order to obtain licensure for my business. Around four thirty, on my way back from the seminar, I realized that I needed to stop for fuel. Upon arriving at the gas station, I quickly noticed that I had left my purse at the seminar location and did not have enough fuel in my car to get back since I had driven quite a distance. I called my husband and told him the situation, but instead of telling me he was on his way, he tried to explain to me why he could not come (which was unusual for him). Suddenly, my thinking shifted as he was talking. I remembered the three dollars and fifty cents in the change compartment of my car that I did not initially think would be enough. I decided that little bit of change should be sufficient to reunite me with my purse. I did not have time to process what my husband had been saying, but I told him that I had found a solution. I put three dollars and fifty cents worth of gasoline in my car; it was a little embarrassing for me at the time, but it worked.

A little after 10 o’clock that night while I was asleep, I remember my husband touching my arm. He said “Did you hear that noise?” Barely awake, I replied, “No,” and fell back asleep. The next thing I remember is Ronald yelling, “The house is on fire!” It was as if a switch turned on in my head, and I was on autopilot. I jumped down from the bed, went to my daughter’s room, called her by name, and yelled, “There is a fire! Get up!” She immediately followed me as I went to my son’s room, picked him up, and carried him out. As I exited, I called 911 and got in my car, which had been parked in front of the house but not in or near the driveway. I saw that the new car, the BMW, was the source of the fire. The flames were so high that they reached the top of the trees that were in front of the house, causing some of the leaves to catch on fire. A few people from the subdivision were already on the scene and 911 had been called so my husband joined the men. I drove away from the house and remained at a safe distance while still in the subdivision.
