Foreword
In the late 1990s, Carrie and David arrived at our church with their family – they were simply wanting to worship and be closer to Jesus, and to find a place for their children to grow to know Jesus too. This book captures that longing – it’s still burning in their hearts, not just for themselves and their family but for everyone who comes into their lives.
Since then, we have had the joy of helping them lead a church in their home. That is not a place where a leader can hide. We have watched them process their own past, their highs and lows, their health, their working lives and their family’s life. Through it all they have known themselves loved and valued by God, they have clung to Jesus in worship and they have grounded their lives on the eternal truths of the Bible.
We have also watched them putting into practice, not just speaking about, God’s radically inclusive grace and love as they have welcomed, with extravagant generosity, all whom God has brought to them. In the midst of highly pressured lives, both at work and at home, they find time for everyone, wherever they are on their spiritual journey. ‘Doing life miles together,’ is their maxim. The impact of this is that many have found faith in Jesus for the first time, some almost immediately and some after many years. Others have come back to faith in Jesus after time spent in the barren desert of disappointment and pain. And others have grown in their appreciation of what it means to be followers of Jesus in this broken, imperfect world.
This book is written with all those people in mind, reflecting what they have discovered to be some of the most essential truths for life. But it is especially foundational for those new to faith in Jesus. Establishing these foundation stones, and the practice of meditating daily on Scripture, will help build a life that will stand through the storms that the twenty-first century will throw up.
Its pithy style reflects Carrie and David’s experience as sought-after motivational speakers. And its occasionally poetic approach reflects their own creativity and thoughtfulness. You don’t have to have church or previous religious experience to understand it. But, equally, if you read it slowly, you will discover there is so much to ‘chew the cud’ on.
Having journeyed with God for many years, Carrie and David recognize that the process of change is not always as fast as we might like: ‘we grow and change gradually over time’. What they have really grasped, and long for others to grasp, is that the process happens ‘from the inside out’. We have no hesitation in commending not just this book, but also this approach to the Bible, ‘as we grow in recognizing and living in God’s amazing love for us’.

Day 1 Starting the journey
Every journey starts with a single step. Those who are searching for God start the journey or come to God or become aware of him in different places and at different paces. Some come crashing face to face; for others it’s a slow burn, a gradual awakening, a dawning realization; for some it’s as though God has always been there and one day we simply opened the door; for others still it’s the deconstruction of a previous religious experience, ‘Christian’ or otherwise.
There’s no right or wrong way to come to faith; each walk should be respected and accepted. One of the greatest gifts God gives us is choice. He will not push or force his way in. He simply knocks on the door of our lives and waits.
God is the big-picture King-of-the-Universe, but he is also deeply personal. He calls himself ‘I am’, which, translated from the Hebrew (the language of the Old Testament), could be better expressed in English as, ‘I am who you need me to be, when you need me to be it.’
The Christian faith is often described as personal because it is characterized by relationship with him. God has had this ‘personal’ nature from the beginning of time. He created humans for relationship with him and with one another. He is present;
