Description

Editors Mary Elizabeth Moore and Almeda M. Wright address the harsh, challenging, and delicate realities of children and youth-who live as spiritual beings within a beautiful yet destructive world. Providing a practical theological analysis of the spiritual yearnings, expressions, and challenges of children and youth in a world of rapid change, dislocation, violence, and competing loyalties, Children, Youth, and Spirituality in a Troubling World provides readers with a purposeful conversation on this important topic. This book will serve as more than a collection; it will be a genuine conversation, which will in turn stir lively conversation among scholars, theological students, and Christian communities that seek to understand and respond more adequately in ministries to and with children and youth. Contributors include: Claire Bischoff, Susanne Johnson, Jennie S. Knight, Bonnie Miller-McLemore, Mary Elizabeth Moore, Joyce Ann Mercer, Veronice Miles, Rodger Nishioka, Evelyn Parker, Luther E. Smith Jr., Joshua Thomas, Katherine Turpin, David White, Almeda Wright, and Karen Marie Yust.

Acknowledgments
This book begins with gratitude, especially to the children and youth with whom we have walked in making the book. They have been wise, vulnerable, energetic, and revelatory. They have informed and delighted us, and they have raised profound, often unnerving questions. Our gratitude also extends to the countless children and youth whom we picture as we cast hope for the book’s future. We hope the volume will contribute to the flourishing of all those young people whose mentors, religious leaders, families, and friends read these pages. We also wish to thank several particular people, beginning with the Association of Practical Theology (APT), which engaged in two extended sessions on the subject of children and youth in a troubling world in 2002, a double session connected to the American Academy of Religion, followed by the APT’s biennial conference. Some chapters in this volume were presented initially in one of those gatherings. The APT discourses helped identify themes on which practical theologians have much to contribute; they also identified issues, research projects, and theoretical frameworks that have since generated further study and dialogue. One purpose of this volume is to expand and deepen that ongoing conversation, bringing practical theologians together around a common concern about which they have much to offer in insight and practical wisdom. This volume is communal in another significant way. It was part of a threeyear focus on Children in Law, Society, and Religion, sponsored by the Center for the Study of Law and Religion (CSLR, formerly Center for the Interdisciplinary Study of Religion) at Emory University. Funding was provided by The Pew Charitable Trust, Inc. Through the generosity of CSLR and Pew, we were able to sponsor a writers’ conference in May 2005. In this venue, we engaged the chapters of this volume in a public panel and in small working sessions with academic and professional leaders. The working conference enhanced esprit de corps among the authors and enlarged our visions. It also helped authors deepen, refine, and integrate their work with that of others. We left the conference with a sense of the whole, together with practical guidance for our particular chapters. This contributed to the quality of the book and to the vitality of our work in integrating practical theological research on young people. For the support of CSLR, we say a particular thank you to John Witte, Anita Mann, Amy Wheeler, and April Bogle. For the conference itself, we say thank you to the authors, who worked together magnificently, and to a team of assistants and readers who engaged the early versions of chapters with astuteness

and guidance. These included: Sybrina Atwaters, Julia Wallace, Jessica Davenport, Sheila Elliot, Natalya Shulgina, Sarah Poole, Pam McCurdy, Cathy Wright, Andy Webb, Michelle Holtmann, Jeannine Pope, Sharletta Green, Katie Davis, Mike Stone, and Lauren Dunkle. We also offer thanks to the editorial teams with whom we worked in making this book. Ulrike Guthrie, a freelance editor, gave important guidance at the outset, suggesting ways to integrate a volume that has many authors. Trent Butler was very helpful to us as we worked with Chalice Press, as have been Cynthia A. Meilink, Lisa Scronce, and Gail Stobaugh. To these people, with their expertise in editing and communications, we say a hearty thanks! Finally, we thank our readers, who will continue the dialogue sparked by this book. More important, you will continue sharing your gifts with the young, while receiving and delighting in the gifts that young people themselves are eager to share. We hope sincerely that the book will contribute to young lives and to those who love them!
