DEDICATION
This book is dedicated to my grandchildren, Seth Nathaniel Heitzig and Kadence Joy Heitzig, both of whom are uniquely crafted by the personal God of Scripture written about in these pages. It is my deepest hope that they will walk closely with Him to fulfill His design for their lives .
ACKNOWLEDGMENTS
I want to acknowledge the team I have around me that makes all my work possible. It s true that alone we can do little; together we can do much. Solomon nailed it when he wrote, Two are better than one a rope made of three cords is hard to break (Ecclesiastes 4:9-12). It s true in daily life, and it was true in the writing of this book.
Thanks to my wife, Lenya, who understands the power of the printed word as well as the spoken word; to my son, Nate, whose contemporary insight is always helpful; to my personal assistant, Laney Dennis, whose steady support makes writing times possible; and to my local publishing team, Quent, Brian, and Lorin, for insights, revisions, and great ideas. I also have a large church staff that is creative, competent, and energetic to follow God s call; they inspire me.
I am indebted to Dr. J.I. Packer for his book Knowing God , and equally to Tim Stafford, who wrote Knowing the Face of God . These two unique contributions to my early spiritual journey fed my hunger to know the God who revealed Himself in creation and Scripture.
I am most grateful to the God of the universe, who revealed Himself unselfishly through the person of His Son, the Lord Jesus Christ. He interrupted my life when I was turning eighteen. I m so glad He did, and I am still learning what it means to walk with Him.

About the Publisher
PREFACE: ABOUT THE COVER ART
T he work on the cover of this book is derived from Woodcut for Die Bibel in Bildern , 1860, by German artist Julius Schnorr von Carolsfeld (1794-1872). It shows God the Father in power and splendor, a personification of His glory.
Von Carolsfeld was part of the Nazarene Movement, comprised of German Romantic artists driven by a yearning to highlight Christian themes whose work revolved around biblical subjects. He is best remembered for his Picture Bible, published between 1852-1860.
Many throughout history have tried to portray God via artistic means. An image like von Carolsfeld s is creative and beautiful-but limited. It has to be. No person can capture the grandeur of God on canvas, in marble, or engraved on stone or wood. No artistic work can encompass the enormity and essence of God; we can only paint to comprehend, never to apprehend.
Using art to depict God is purely an imaginative endeavor. In employing art on the cover of Biography of God , my intention is not to suggest what God looks like or that God the Father is a man (much less an old man, subject to the ravages of time). Jesus, after all, said God is Spirit (John 4:24). Rather, I hope to make a point as to the overarching intention of the book: to render a description of God that is both biblical and beautiful, helping you as the reader to better comprehend our awe-inspiring Creator.
LET ME INTRODUCE YOU
W ho is God? What is He like? Is He even there at all? What does He want? Why doesn t He make Himself more available especially to me?
These were the questions that peppered my mind as a youngster. The memory is still fresh: Around twelve years old, I stood in my backyard on a sunlit morning, burning a small amount of trash for my mom (those were the days when air quality management in California wasn t a huge concern). As the smoke wafted upward, I felt almost transported back in time to Old Testament days, when the priests sacrificed offerings in the temple. I started to think about this simple three-letter word: G-O-D. So easy to say! So hard to understand!
Thoughts about God imposed themselves on me as a youngster, bumping into my everyday activities like an uninvited panhandler. I began wondering if it was possible to know for sure if God existed, and if so, could I know Him the way I knew my mom and dad? Yeah, I went to church with my family and heard the standard answers. But that wasn t enough for me. I wanted more.
An unfed hunger grew inside me to discover the divine presence. Was God an imaginary idea concocted by people throughout time as a convenient way to understand their own existence? Or had God revealed Himself first, breaking into human reality from the outside-in? If God was real, what did He do all day? Did He have any hobbies? Could we make Him happy, sad, or mad? What did He look like? Such are the common thoughts of a child.
A kindergarten teacher once assigned her class to draw a picture of something that was important to them. Each of the children got to work, and scrawled images of parents, pets, sports, and rainbows began to appear. Johnny sat in the back, head down, working diligently. All the other kids turned in their assignments, but Johnny drew on, feverishly scribbling with furrowed brow.
His teacher noticed and asked, Johnny, what are you drawing?
Without looking up, Johnny replied, I m drawing God.
Smiling, the teacher said, Well, Johnny, no one knows what God looks like.
Without missing a beat, Johnny looked up. They will when I m through.
I can t help but chuckle at Johnny s confidence-a child s belief that he knew what God looked like. If Johnny were an adult, we d call his claim arrogant, and we wouldn t be wrong. So as I sit down to write a book about God, I want to make it clear that I m not pulling a Johnny. In fact, I still sometimes
