Description

This inspiring book presents the opposite side of the coin of DeMarco's previous bestseller, Architects of the Culture of Death, and presents short but vivid and insightful profiles of individuals who worked heroically, consistently, and effectively in defense of life. Grouped according to various fields of endeavor-medicine, philosophy, theology, sports, entertainment, and politics and the arts-and hailing from many different countries, the heroes described within exemplify the diversity of the pro-life movement. Some are still living, others have passed from the scene. Men and women are represented as well as individuals from different races. While some are Jewish and others Protestant, the majority are Catholic. Offering the most extensive and diverse representation of pro-life stalwarts that has ever been collected, Apostles of the Culture of Life will serve as an inspiration to anyone who loves justice, while, at the same time, providing cogent and convincing arguments as to why the defense of life is the most important issue of our time. Read it and be inspired!

More Praise for Apostles of the Culture of Life …
“DeMarco here provides 56 vignettes of those heroes from different walks of life who stood up and said “no” to abortion-on-demand and euthanasia as a supposed merciful act. His broad interests and deep understanding will uplift readers with inspiring and inspired examples of those who saw the evil of deliberate medicalized killing and responded with reason, courage, and love.”
—Paul Tuns, author and editor of Interim
“Dr. DeMarco shows that the struggle to support life in the face of numerous attacks is heroically evident among people from many disciplines and religions. This superb book is a valuable addition to the library of anyone who preaches, teaches, or speaks on issues related to the defense of life.”
—Dr. Cynthia Toolin-Wilson, Academic Dean of Online Learning, Holy Apostles College and Seminary
“In this new work, Don DeMarco manages to acquaint us with each ‘apostle of life’ as if for the first time, while, at the same time inspiring us to emulate them. A most uplifting and encouraging work!”
—Christine Valentine-Owsik, Editor of Legatus Magazine
“Donald DeMarco has written an amazingly detailed account of the many prominent people who have borne the brunt of the pro-life movement over the years. I had never before realized the far-ranging variety of the movement and all the heroic people who have sustained it.”
—James Hitchcock, Professor Emeritus, St. Louis University
“Here is a unique and valuable work that celebrates and brings to life the achievements of the many heroes who are truly Apostles of the Culture of Life .”
—Stephen D. Schwarz, godson of Dietrich von Hildebrand and author of Understanding Abortion: From Mixed Feelings to Rational Thought
“I have always said that it would have been a cheerful experience for me as a university student to have been in one of Professor DeMarco’s classes, soaking in his wisdom. It is an honor for me to be listed in the burgeoning group of lovers of life and light Professor DeMarco defines as Apostles for the Culture of Life .”
—Judie Brown, President of American Life League

I want to thank Peggy Moen of The Wanderer , Tom Wehner of the National Catholic Register , Judie Brown of Celebrate Life , Christine Owsik of Legatus , Maria Maffucci and Anne Conlon of the Human Life Review , and the editors of Human Life International for granting permission to publish many (but not all) of the articles originally published, though under different titles, of significantly different lengths, in pre-revised forms, and sometimes with a different focus. In addition, some of these articles were further revised after consulting with featured individuals. These editors contributed greatly in planting and cultivating the seed which ultimately grew and became adapted to Apostles of the Culture of Life .
Foreword
A t the Human Life Review , we look forward to submissions from the prolific Professor Donald DeMarco. We know his prose will be philosophically rich and morally astute, and it won’t be just these great and good things: there will also likely be some delightful surprises. It might be a new way of understanding a concept, a humorous anecdote or bit of whimsy, or a fascinating cultural reference—to baseball, music, science, or historical curiosities. And encompassing it all, a compassionate understanding of human nature and unwavering support for the sanctity of life.
This is an apt description of the book you are holding: Apostles of the Culture of Life . It’s a collection of brief biographies of an eclectic group of human beings, some living, some recently deceased, and some who lived centuries ago. What binds them all together is that they are “heroes” in the “pervasive conflict between the Culture of Life and the Culture of Death.” Included here are philosophers, doctors, athletes, performers, composers, writers, comedians, theologians, great Catholic saints and even the Holy Family. Each portrait is enriched by colorful details. For example, in “A Doctor of Love,” we learn about the Australian Dr. John Billings, a pioneer in discovering methods of natural family planning, and we also learn something poignant about mother kangaroos and the “instinctive wisdom” found in nature.
DeMarco kindly dedicated this book to my late father, J. P. McFadden—profiled in “Piety and Laughter”—one of the individuals lesser-known to the world, but well-known to fellow soldiers in the early days of the pro-life movement. When J. P. died in October of 1998, New York Post columnist Ray Kerrison wrote (in “Death Takes a Stubborn Defender of Life”) that J. P. “did not build skyscrapers or write his name in Broadway neon. He didn’t run City Hall or preside over a corporate empire.” He “was a rock of a man who served God, family and country” and devoted most of his working life to protecting human life. While some of the apostles here might have had their names in neon—Clare Boothe Luce comes to mind—and some were famous, that is not what matters here. What connects them all is their heroic witness to the truth of human dignity and purpose.
Today, praise God, there is tremendous youthful energy in the pro-life movement. These new soldiers need to get this book and learn the stories of those who forged the noble path they now follow. To life!
Maria McFadden Maffucci
Preface
I t is an unchallengeable axiom that a war cannot be won without heroes. The war of which I am speaking, one that is raging presently, is not military, but cultural. And although it is essentially cultural, rivers of blood, nonetheless, continue to flow. It is the pervasive conflict between the Culture of Life and the Culture of Death. And it is a most unfortunate aspect of this war that the Mass Media, which shapes the popular mind to such a large degree, neither honors nor admires the heroes who are working for the Culture of Life.
Roger Rosenblatt, a veteran journalist of the Washington Post, Life, Time , and the New York Times , has stated, in a moment of candor, “My trade in journalism is sodden these days
