Description

Tony Wiest leads readers on an interactive journey through the nine fruit of the Spirit and beyond in this book steeped in Scripture.
Galatians 5:22–23 reveals the nine words that are the fruit of the spirit—words that every Christian must make a priority if they want to walk closer to the Lord.
The words are love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.
In this study, the author examines each of those pieces of fruit in detail, so believers, new believers, and even nonbelievers can apply wisdom from Scripture in their lives.
Throughout each chapter, you’ll find blank pages so you can write down your thoughts and notes to refer to later. The author also includes up to five life-application questions, so you can apply the truths of each fruit to your own life.
The author emphasizes that the Holy Spirit is alive and working in us and through us. Seeing God’s love for us is amazing and absolutely remarkable.

This book is dedicated to all the future generations in our family. Even though I may not get the opportunity to meet you, I pray that you will get to know me as you read the following pages. I also pray that you will follow Jesus and have a very deep, profound, and fruitful relationship with Him.
CHAPTER 1
Why?
I can do all this through him who gives me strength.
—Philippians 4:13
Day 1, October 10. It’s been exactly three weeks since I’ve been home from the hospital recovering from a severely infected left foot. The healing and recovery time may be over a year until I am fully back to normal. I am not able to walk or work or do many of the normal activities I have done my whole life. I think I am also recovering from PTSD from being alone in the hospital for eleven days, as I couldn’t have any visitors due to COVID-19 and had to make all the medical decisions without any help—no wife (Jen), no dog (Buster), no sons (Trevor and Brett), and no other family or friends. It sure is nice to be home, and none of us should take being home for granted!
So I’ve been pretty much stuck on the couch watching TV and waiting to go out to the next doctor’s appointment. Things have gotten easier as I’ve gotten used to my new routine. I am looking for small victories every day as I do my physical therapy and move more around the house on my new knee-walker scooter. The scooter keeps my left foot elevated while I push off with my right foot. I plan to trick it out with a bottle holder, a horn, a Bluetooth music player, a mirror, flames on the sides, and any other thing that will fit on my cool ride! The horn will be especially useful when I go to doctor appointments. It did arrive with a basket in the front so I can bring the important stuff with me. I will not, however, be installing a fluorescent red caution flag on the back or any bumper stickers promoting any political or sports favorites. Jen is fine with not adding anything to my scooter, but with the holidays coming up, I am letting everyone who will listen know my wishes. If nothing else, I think colorful lights and various magnets will look super cool on the basket!
As I sat up in bed this morning, praying and thinking about getting going for the day, the Holy Spirit, alive in me, began speaking to me. He reminded me of the nine most important words in my life up to this point. It was He who had moved me to memorize these nine words a few years ago. It took about two years before I could say them out loud and then recite the scripture verses where they appear in the Bible. The Holy Spirit then gave me the idea to study each of these nine words in depth and write down what I’ve learned so that others may have a deeper understanding of these words along with me. So this will be a journey that both you, the reader, and I will be on together.
It is my deepest wish and prayer that this study will bear much fruit in your life and that you can add what you learn here to what you already know and are living. I also pray that this writing is simple enough to understand for nonbelievers and new believers and challenging for mature believers as well. I have left blank pages at the end of each chapter so you can write down your thoughts and notes to refer to later. I have also included up to five life-application questions for each chapter so that you may be able to take what you know and have learned and apply these truths to your lives. I also will reference three to five scriptures on each of the nine words. These verses will all be worth memorizing, so I challenge you to do that. I have a really hard time memorizing scripture verses, so I promise to memorize at least one verse per chapter! I’ll let you know how that’s going at the end of the book.
I should let it be known that I have no formal Bible education, such as seminary. In general, I am not an avid reader of fiction or even nonfiction books. I haven’t studied these nine words in any books or materials except for the Bible. I just want you to know that I am not rewriting someone else’s thoughts or beliefs on the topics at hand, except as quoted and credited. I am a deacon in our local church and have served God and our church willingly to the best of my abilities. Jen and I have also been active in a worldwide organization called Bible Study Fellowship (BSF) for over fifteen years. (Go to bsfinternational.org for more info.) Jen has been a substitute teaching leader in BSF for about five years. I sometimes lovingly call her Pastor Jen, as she gives lectures on the studies once per month. She spends at least ten to fifteen hours preparing for a forty-minute lecture. She has been an amazing resource and best friend to me, answering my questions and discussing with me the topics at hand. I have been a group leader and administrative leader in BSF over the years. Unfortunately, I have recently resigned from my position because of my lack of mobility. Because I can’t serve right now, I have extra time to study and write with the TV off. The peace and quiet is tranquil and provides a great space to gather thoughts to share with you. I absolutely will be relying on the Holy Spirit completely to guide and direct me as we go over the topics to come.
There will be key words that are capitalized, displayed in bold, or italicized to stress their importance in this study. I have also underlined all Bible verses and portions of actual verses so that you will know that these are not my words but God’s word, and to stress their importance in this writing,
So, this will be about as much of a layman’s study as there is. Are you ready? I am, so let’s go!
First of all, I’d like to begin this journey in prayer.
Dear Lord,
Thank You for giving me the strength, discipline, and wisdom to begin writing today. I have no idea what will become of this, if anything, but I am going to be faithful to You and begin. Please allow the Holy Spirit to take over and guide me as I put thoughts into writing. May these words also benefit others in a profound way as they read them. Please let this be much, much more about You and less and less about me. Please also keep me humble and obedient during this time of writing. I love You! In Jesus’s name. Amen.
Here are the nine words we will be studying, as stated in Galatians 5:22–23:
1. Love
2. Joy
3. Peace
4. Patience
5. Kindness
6. Goodness
7. Faithfulness
8. Gentleness
9. Self-control

CHAPTER 2
Love
For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.
—John 3:16
Okay, John 3:16 sounds like a great place to start. The good news for me here is that I already have this verse memorized, so I’ve fulfilled my promise to you so far! I don’t think I can get away with this as my memory verse for love, so I’ll try a bit harder as we go and let you know later the new verse I’m memorizing.
This particular fruit of the Spirit will be one of the most difficult for me to write about. There are so many forms of love that I can’t even come close to understanding and describing in detail everything about love. So, you’re going to get my simple layman’s descriptions based on the scriptures I’ve picked (which wasn’t very easy either).
I must let you know that my family and I are avid golfers and students and fans of the game. We have two adult sons who absolutely love the game and are much be
