Description

Inspiring devotionals tailored to encourage anyone suffering from an eating disorder to find healing in Christ.

Eating disorders are underwhelmingly discussed, highly misunderstood, and rarely spoken about in relation to Scripture and faith. But even though the bible may not address this trial specifically, we can still look to God’s word for wisdom, truth, and healing from the eating disorders that we, or the ones we love are battling.

In a collection of faith-based devotionals, Kasie Padilla leads others through thirty-one days of heartening messages and applicable scripture inspired by her desire to open hearts to receive His truth and love, even during the darkest of days. Her devotionals touch on the peace found in Jesus, the truth that we are all worthy of His love, the impact relationships have on successfully progressing through hardships, the Holy Spirit’s power that resides within all of us, healthy habits for healing, the motives of the heart, and much more.

31 Days of Hope for Overcoming Eating Disorders shares inspiring devotionals tailored to encourage anyone suffering from an eating disorder to find healing in Christ.

Introduction
Whether it’s your first time opening this book, or you’re back for round five, welcome! I’m so happy you are here. God led you to this devotional for a purpose, and my hope is that your heart will be open to receiving His truth and love through it. Eating disorders (ED) are underwhelmingly discussed, highly misunderstood, and rarely spoken about in relation to Scripture and faith. But even though the Bible may not address this trial specifically, you can still look to God’s Word for wisdom, truth, and healing from the eating disorders you are battling.
Day 1
In His Peace
O ne of the greatest torments you may face with eating disorders in your life is the complete and total lack of peace. Food may be one of your primary sources of anxiety, and it also happens to be the one thing you can never live without or get away from. Do you see the dilemma? Every work party and lunch results in overthinking and anxiety. Every holiday and family gathering is no longer filled with laughter and love, but with stress and exhaustion. You may even turn down opportunities to connect with friends over game nights, celebrations, and catch-ups, because you couldn’t face the thoughts and feelings that accompanied ED.
But there is an answer to finding peace in every single one of those moments, and His name is Jesus. Has it ever occurred to you that peace isn’t just something God can provide, but rather, it’s who He is ? Isaiah 9:3 says, “For unto us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.” Jesus is the Prince of Peace; simply say His name and allow it to wash over you.
Maybe it sounds good in theory, but you’re not sure how you can actually overcome your battle with food. Maybe you’ve experienced countless sleepless nights, flooding your bed with tears and wondering if you’ll ever find a way out. But know this. We can place our trust in Jesus, because there is nothing He can’t overcome! “I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world” (John 16:33). Jesus endured everything as he hung on the cross; He bore the weight of this fallen world: every sin, trial, heartache, and emotion. But the grave couldn’t keep Him. He rose three days later, and conquered it all so that today you could live in freedom.
Claim your freedom. As those thoughts and feelings begin to arise with ED, say His name. Say “Jesus” and let your weary soul rest in peace, knowing that the battle is already won. He never promised this life would be easy, but He did promise to be with us in the middle of it. Over the next month, we’ll talk about some practical steps to help you overcome your battle with eating disorders and discover the healthy, abundant life Jesus has waiting for you.

Day 2
The Truth Will Prevail
T here are many factors to overcoming ED, but it’s incredibly vital to fight and replace negative self-talk. What we think in our minds becomes what we believe, and what we believe eventually becomes who we are. Not only does science back this concept, but the Bible confirms it in Psalm 23:7: “For as he thinks in his heart, so is he.”
Our minds are more powerful than we will ever come to realize. As we repeat thoughts and behaviors, we begin to create neural pathways in the brain, which become patterns that more easily form habits. It takes a mere twenty repetitions to form a neural pathway and just forty to fifty repetitions to create a habit. Consider this: how many times in a single day do you think a self-defeating thought?
It’s daunting to think of the reality of that answer. Maybe you’ve hit that twenty mark before the day has even ended. That’s why it is absolutely essential to be mindful of what you are truly thinking and telling yourself. Paul explained in his second letter to the Corinthians why you need to change your self-talk, and how you can actually do it.
We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ. (2 Corinthians 10:5)
If you are constantly telling yourself, “I’m not good enough,” “They will never love me if I stay like this,” “If only I looked more like _____,” “God should have created me differently,” and so on, you will end up believing those thoughts are true. However, to believe those thoughts is to disobey Christ; God does not and will not ever say those things about us.
On the contrary, the enemy certainly does and will. He is the father of lies, whose goal is to cause us to believe the worst about ourselves. If he can convince us we are inadequate, he knows he will freeze us in our tracks, and we will be unable to complete the work God has called us to. But when we listen to our Heavenly Father, the one who declares, “I am truth,” we will begin to see ourselves as He does: loved, called, His, worthy, a child of light, chosen, and redeemed. Wow! Can you imagine what could be if you chose to believe that is who you are ? God is truth. He is not capable of lies. He has spoken this of you, and you are free to believe it. Take captive every thought that tells you otherwise, replace it with His truth, and live in the freedom of who God says you are today.

Day 3
Grace Wins, Perfection Loses
E D can be a nasty cycle you find yourself repeating. You wish there was a way out, but do not know where to find it. Perhaps, just when you thought you had found the way to healing and freedom, something triggered you, and after all the work you had put in, you suddenly found yourself in the pain and anguish of relapsing. Either way, the emotional toll of battling an eating disorder might leave you feeling hopeless.
But don’t give up; there is hope!
