Description

These vibrant and thought-provoking studies are intended for use in a group, but could work equally well as an aid to personal devotion. This collection sets out to build a bridge between the eternal Gospel and its lived context in contemporary life; together they form a comprehensive overview of the Christian way of discipleship. Covering a wide-range of topics and themes - such as Baptism, Spiritual Charisms, Grace and Ordination to name just a few - Penelope Wilcock will lead you in greater appreciation and understanding of Scripture in this thought-provoking, challenging and accessible collection.

Extrait

"Totally outstanding and inspirational."
Revd Dr Canon Andrew White
"This second volume of stand-alone Bible studies offers a feast of good things, whether you are using them in a group or in your own quiet time.
Pen has a gift of being able to pack a lot into very few words. Her commentaries alone offer much food for thought, while the questions she poses open up many avenues for discussion.
It’s a wonderful resource for people who appreciate a starting point and then the freedom to explore, meander and digress."
Jackie Harris, editor, Woman Alive
"Pen Wilcock has done it again! In this second volume of Bible studies she helps us reflect on Scripture, apply it to our lives, and connect with the life-giving grace and mercy of God. Her studies are thought-provoking, inspiring, and relevant. They help me remember who God is, what His great purposes are in the world and how I fit into them faithfully. What more could we ask for?
Use these Bible studies on your own, in a group, or as part of your church’s discipleship program and you will grow in faith, in community, and in understanding of how to live out a relationship with Jesus Christ in the world today."
Revd Malcolm Duncan, lead pastor, Dundonald Elim Church
Penelope Wilcock has pastored ten Methodist congregations, worked as a school chaplain and a hospice chaplain, been involved in ministry with prisoners, and initiated a Fresh Expression of Church. She blogs at Kindred of the Quiet Way (www.kindredofthequietway.blogspot.co.uk) and is a regular columnist in Woman Alive magazine.
She believes in the hidden working of the gospel in the context of the daily lives of ordinary people as the revolution that will change the world.
Penelope lives a quiet life on England’s Sussex coast.

About this book
Less is more in group work
100 More Stand-Alone Bible Studies can be an aid to personal devotion and could be very useful for a quiet-day context, but is primarily intended as a resource for your home group. In the introduction to volume 1 ( 100 Stand-Alone Bible Studies ), you will find detailed notes on home-group leadership and preparation, and how to use these studies.
The happy experience of many years of leading retreats, quiet days, and small groups has impressed on me the vital lesson that "less is more".
Most leaders (myself included) fall into the trap of fearing inadequacy – wanting to be sure enough material is offered, and the subject is thoroughly covered with no stone left unturned. People go home with distended souls – inspirational resource material pressed down, shaken together, and running over from every spiritual orifice.
It’s not necessary.
You need a clock, because people have babysitters waiting and schedules to fulfil. Say what the time frame will be, and keep to it.
You need confidence – to wait, to give space for silence, to be at warm peace with people’s tears if their sharing touches on deep places in their psyche and they can’t help crying.
You need trust – that the Holy Spirit will show up, that people will have enough experiences and opinions they want to share to fill up the time, and that they have the inborn skill to meet with God in their discussions without anxious chaperoning.
You need a certain spaciousness in your spirit – an inner freedom. A home-group leader who feels a concern to monitor and promote religious orthodoxy will not support spiritual formation. Of course people’s views on life will be exploratory, sometimes surprising, even heretical. Christ who holds all truth within himself can be trusted to find them, to sit alongside them, to guide them. The home-group leader is there to listen, to offer, to suggest – not to be an accredited Thought Police officer.
People want to be beheld, heard, affirmed, and loved; but they also want to contribute, to shape the thing themselves, without being much curtailed or interrupted.
Though these Bible studies seem at first sight a bit skinny, a little "lite", this is deliberate. You see, they are not intended to be the substance of your meeting. They are the
