Description

Vedic Rishis propounded the process of establishing the pious earth as the abode of Mother, which later on culminated into Shaktipithas after combining the cultural and human consciousness and further calumniated as 51 Shaktipithas from numerical images in all the alphabets of Devanagari and displaying the Nadasvaras emanated from Devanagari alphabets encompassing the whole of Bharatvarsh. In the background of the whole Bharatvarsh it has been described as 'Bharat Maa' in Vishnu Purana. Around 9th-10th century, this concept was fully established and became the source of inspiration and energy for Indians. The co-ordination between the earth and Mother Power is vastly described in Rigveda (4.57.6-7) and Atharvaveda (12.1). Ten Mahapithas are also described in Mahabharata. Later on, the importance and spiritual vision of these Shaktipithas were described through 'Devi Mahatmya' and Devi Bhagavata Purana and these Shaktipithas have now been established as 'Place of Purity' or 'Divine Place' or 'Power Source Areas' due to which pilgrimage to all Shaktipithas came into being, which in present reference, is an important process for cultural, spiritual and ecological consciousness. In the aforesaid reference Shri Suresh Kumar Singh has enumerated the status of 51 Shaktipithas, their importance and the information regarding pilgrimage to these Shaktipithas in this book and has given a new dimension to the understanding of Indian culture.

Foreword
T his is a valuable work by Shri Suresh Kumar Singh, senior I.A.S. officer in Uttar Pradesh Government. His devotion, sincerity and craving for knowledge is exemplary. He has tried to list all 51 Śaktipī has in simple English language to give a quick and complete description of all aspects of each Pī ha.
Devī Bhāgavata Purā a , part 7, chapter 30 lists 108 Śaktipī has with their names, places and Bhairavas. Devī Purā a , chapter 39, lists 51 Śaktipī has. Devī Gītā , chapter 38 lists 72 Pī has. Chapters 31-40 of Devī Bhāgavata Purā a , part 7 are called Devī Gītā. Tantra Cū āma i lists 52 Pī has.
The author should give a brief preface indicating his source and if possible add original verses as reference. Or, the original sources may be indicated in brief and the version followed by him.
Story of Śaktipī has is that Dak a was doing a Yajña at Kanakhal near Haridwar. He invited every God, except Śiva with whom his daughter Satī was married. Satī also was not invited, but she couldn’t resist visit to her father’s function. On seeing insult to Śiva, she became very hurt and immolated herself in fire. When followers of Śiva learnt this, they destroyed the Yajña , burnt beard of priest Bh gu and cut head of Dak a. As there was anarchy in absence of ruler Dak a, Siva fixed goat’s head on his body and beard of goat was fixed on face of Bh gu. ( Kūrma Purā a , chapter 1.15; Nārada Purā a , 2.66; Padma Purā a , chapter 1.5; Brahma Purā a , Chapters 1.32, 37; Bhāgavata Purā a , Chapters 4.3-7; Matsya Purā a , Chap 13; Li ga Purā a , Chapter 1.100; Vāmana Purā a , Chapters 2-4; Vāyu Purā a , Chapter 30). After allowing completion of Yaj a , Śiva was very sad and carried dead body of Satī on his shoulders. To remove his attachment with dead body, Vi u cut the dead body with his Cakra. Parts of dead body fell on different places in country which are the places of Śaktipī has. There is some historic effect of this incident in addition to Pī has. Asuras were disciples of Śukra, son of Bh gu who was given beard of goat. Śukra was called Kāvya and his place is Kaaba in Arab. The people of that region, now Muslims still prefer goat shaped beard with pride. This was again forced later. Yavanas of that region had attacked India and killed king Bāhu in 6777 BC (Dyonisus attack as per Megasthenes). His son Sagara retaliated and again forced them (Parada, Pahlava) to have goat like beard ( Vi u Purā a , 3.3.47, Brahmā a Purā a , 2.3.63.138-139 etc.).
Brahmā is one, but it divides itself in 2 forms for creating the world. Conscious cause is called Puru a and Material (Mat ) cause is Prak ti. In created world, bodies with definite shape (Pura) and boundary are Puru a and spread of region is Śrī or Strī (feminine). Another difference is that Puru a is Vrsa i.e. it radiates (var ā = rain). Feminine aspect is Yosa which receives. Identifiable world starts with galaxy whose creative field 10 times bigger, called Kūrma in Veda and Goloka or the great womb in Brahmavaivartta Purā a , Prak ti Kha a, chapter 3. Its size is 10 power 18 yojana ( yojana is 12.8 kms or 1000 part of earth diameter). In another measure, it has 52 dhāmas, where each dhāma is double of previous dhāma (B hadāra yaka Upani ad, 3.3.2). 3 dhāmas are within earth, so the size of Goloka is 2 power 49 times earth size. Galaxy has 49 dhāmas for 49 Maruts. Thus, there are 52 dhāmas or zones of Śakti. World is described by words which are broken into letters. For 49 Maruts, there are 49 letters from A to H in Devanāgarī script which is symbol of 33 Devas (consonants from K to H). So, human body being an image of world has also 49 letters in different centres (6 Cakras of spinal chord). All parts being A to H, self is called Aham. This is body, called field ( k etra ). Its knower is K etrajña (Gītā, chapter 13). So, we add 3 joint letters K a, Tra, Jña at end, making a total of 52 letters. Thus, inner world of man has also 52 Pī has. These are called Mat ka (mother) as this gives birth to world of language representing actual world. As, their image, our country has 52 Pī has. Concept is that our country itself is form of Durgā as stated in Devī Atharva Śīr a and described in national song Vande Mātaram . Our country is also in form of Śiva whose places are 12 Jyotirli gas, 3 Trili ga and a Svayambhu li ga. These too are in space and in human body.
I wish success and well being of the author in his pious work.

Preface
Ā di Parāśakti is known as ‘The Eternally limitless Powers’. According to the Śakti devotees, only Mahāśakti is the supreme Brahma God. She presents herself in different forms (Svarūpas) and performs in various roles (līlās) , She is also referred to as Nava Durgā, Mahāvidyā, Jagaddhātrī, Kātyāyanī, Lalitāmbā, Gāyatrī, Bhūvaneśvarī, Kālī, Tārā, Bagalamukhī, Durgā. It is only this supreme energy with which Lord Brahmā creates the world, Lord Vi u protects the world and Lord Śiva uses to destroy the world i.e. it is the great Ādyā Parāśakti who works beyond the creation, protection and destruction of this entire universe. The Parāśakti Durgā scatters herself in ten Svarūpas that is called ten Mahāvidyā. The Ādi Śakti is the Divine Mother, the primal, protection and is generating energy in the cosmos.
The Devībhāgavata Mahāpurā a states that Ādi Parāśakti is the original creator, observer and destroyer of the whole universe. However, the goddess Ādi Parāśakti is also considered to be truly supreme power, she is the only great goddess and therefore is the only source of all other goddesses.
In this mortal world, the people use to worship ‘Mahākālī’ to get power, pray to ‘Mahāsarasvatī’ to gain knowledge and make please to ‘Mahālak mī’ to attain wealth. In this way, they adore the supreme infinite power Ādyā Śakti with various names as Goddess Ga gā, Pārvatī, Lak mī, Sarasvatī, Kālī and Tulasī.
In India, there are significant shines and pilgrimage destinations in shaktism. According to the Purā as, the history of Dak a Prajāpati’s yajña and Satī’s self immolation and immense significance in shaping the concept of origin of the Śaktipī has. It is an important incident in Shivism resulting in the emergence of Pārvatī in the place of Satī Devī, Śaktipī has are the shrines or divine places of the Mother Goddess. These are the places that are believed to have been blessed with the presence of Śakti due to the falling of body parts of the corpse of Satī Devī, when Lord Śiva carried it and wandered throughout Āryāvarta in sorrow and grief, Lord Vi u had detracted her blissful body into 52 parts using his Sudarśana Cakra which fell on Earth to become holy spots to pray to the goddess named Śaktipī ha and Lord Śiva took the form of Bhairava. These are 51 Śaktipī has linking to the 51 alphabets in Sanskrit. The Śaktipī has are sprinkled throughout the Indian sub-continent.
At present, there are 41 Śaktipī has situated in India, 3 in Nepal, 4 in Bangladesh, 1 in Pakistan, 1 in Sri Lanka, 1 in Tibet.
Since time immemorial, in countries across the globe that eternally limitless Power is worshipped as a feminine identity and has been referred to as Mother-Parāmbā, in India this deity constitutes the central part of one of the primary schools or Devotional Hinduism where she is described as the energy of Śiva, the purifier or destroy of evil.
The devotees who strongly believe in supreme energy and have strong faith in Śaktipī ha should go for these places as if they are unable to visit all the Śaktipī has, they can assimilate and entangle themselves with this 51 Śaktipī has Māhātmya.
In this universe, only this Infinite Energy exists that scatters herself in various forms and plays infinite roles with various names and again accumulated her all forms in finite form. This supreme Power is known with 10 names of Mahāvidyā as— Kālī, Tārā, Sodaśi, Bhuvaneśvarī etc. Śakti is worshipped in different ways, in which non-violence method is called the best one in which no impure or tāmasika thing is used for worshipping. Prayers are offered with pure heartily feelings (bhāvas) in this method. According to the Rudrayāmalam —
Bhavena labhyate sarvam bhavena daivadarśanam| Bhavena paramjñānam tasmad bhavanlambanam||
— Rudrayāmala
