Preface
There are currently thousands of nurses in the UK with mentor qualifications supporting, guiding and facilitating the learning experiences of pre-registration nursing students. Mentors are the unsung heroes of our profession; tirelessly supporting the development of novice practitioners and contributing their wealth of knowledge, skill and professionalism to ensure nursing remains a respected and highly valued profession. Our intention in writing this book was to provide a valuable resource for those who are already qualified mentors, as it will clarify the various issues and roles that are an integral part of your accountability and responsibility. If you are unsure of your role, or perhaps have become ‘stale’ as a mentor, then this book will help to motivate and inspire you to reach your full potential. If you would like to build and improve on skills that you already have then this book will help you to identify specific strategies that you can incorporate into your current practice. If you have identified areas that are not working for you in your mentoring role then this book will help you to clarify and rectify your current practice.

What if i'm not a mentor?
This book will also be useful for those who are contemplating developing their careers by undertaking a mentorship course. The realities and challenges of the role will be clearly presented, with insights into the opportunities and challenges that you will face as a mentor. If you are considering becoming a mentor then we ask first and foremost that you do so because you want to make a positive impact on the learning experience of students on practice placement. This book will help you to uncover exactly what that impact can be and also elaborate and explain where the mentoring role fits in terms of professional accountability and responsibility.

Using the book
First and foremost, this book is designed to be a user-friendly, accessible resource for qualified mentors and those interested in finding out more about the role. It can either be read cover to cover, or read in a sequence that meets an individual interest and need. All chapters provide both case studies and activities that offer an opportunity to review realistic mentoring issues within a practice placement context. In addition, we have provided key points and top tips throughout the book to highlight specific advice related to the mentoring role. At all stages of the book you are encouraged to reflect on your own practice in relation to the current standards of mentorship in the UK.

Standards of mentorship
The Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) Standards to Support Learning and Assessment in Practice (2008) provide a standard that all mentors must meet in order to support and assess students on programmes which lead to registration or a recordable qualification on the NMC register. This book has been written in support of these standards. As a result, this book may also be used by qualified mentors to reflect and update themselves on the current standards required of them by the NMC. While each chapter addresses a particular theme related to mentoring, it also supports a number of specific criteria within the NMC standards.

Mapping the NMC standards to this book
We have therefore decided to summarize this book both in terms of content of each chapter and also the specific NMC standards that each chapter will support if relevant. In many cases one NMC standard will be applicable to a number of chapters. As a quick resource this mapping exercise may help to clarify specific chapters that may be of immediate interest to you. However, we have also provided the full version of the NMC standards at the end of the book (see Appendix ) so you can view them in their totality.
