Description

As well as outlining the shape of Welsh religious history generally, this volume describes the development of Calvinistic Methodist thought up to and beyond the secession from the Established Church in 1811, and the way in which the Evangelical Revival impacted the Older Dissent to create a vibrant popular Nonconformity. Along with analysing aspects of theology and doctrine, the narrative assesses the contribution of such key personalities as William Williams Pantycelyn, Thomas Charles of Bala andThomas Jones of Denbigh, and the Nonconformists Titus Lewis, Joseph Harris ‘Gomer’, George Lewis, David Rees and Gwilym Hiraethog. Following the notorious ‘Treachery of the Blue Books’ of 1847 and the Religious Census of 1851, Anglicanism regained ground, and among the themes treated in the latter chapters are the influence of High Church Tractarianism and the Broad Church ‘Lampeter Theology’ in the parishes. The volume concludes by assessing the intellectual culture of evangelicalism personified by Lewis Edwards and Thomas Charles Edwards, and describes the challenges of Darwinism, philosophical Idealism and a more critical attitude to the biblical text.

Preface
ït îs wîth much peasure that the concudîng part o thîs two-voume anaysîs o reîgîon and theoogy în Waes, rom the eary modern perîod to the dawn o the twentîeth century, can now to be reeased. Even more than îts predecessor,Theoogîa CambrensîsVoume One, ‘From Reormatîon to Revîva’, the present work, ‘The ong Nîneteenth Century’, has taken me back vîvîdy to my înîtîatîon înto the rîches o ate eîghteenth- and nîneteenth-century Wesh reîgîous hîstory, Irst as an undergraduate în Arts and then în Theoogy at what was the Unîversîty Coege o North Waes, Bangor, and subsequenty as a doc-tora student at Regent’s Park Coege, Oxord, durîng the 1970s and 1980s. Foowîng a Irst academîc appoîntment în 1988, my înîtîa Ied o research was the deveopment o twentîeth-century reîgîous thought, încudîng the massîve contrîbutîon o the Swîss Kar Barth, and havîng pubîshed aîry extensîvey on reîgîon and socîety în post-1914 Waes and urther aIed, ï was drawn back to the prevîous century and the one beore that. Thîs somewhat cîrcuar progressîon not ony provîded me wîth înnumerabe însîghts înto the deveopment o the Wesh reîgîous tradîtîon, but convînced me (î ï needed convîncîng) o the îmmense vaue o what has been or centurîes a core component o the natîon’s experîence. Despîte the secuar predîectîons o the twenty-Irst century, the posîtîve receptîon gîven to Voume One shows that there remaîns a ready apprecîatîon or a work o thîs nature. ïn preparîng the text, certaîn pecuîarîtîes o nomencature needed to be addressed. For the most part (though not aways), ‘Dîssent’ reers to those ïndependents, Baptîsts and oder Presbyterîans who maîn-taîned theîr wîtness between 1760 andc.1820; ‘Nonconormîty’ denotes the expansîve popuar movement whîch, by mîd-century, seemed set on sweepîng a beore ît, wîth the term ‘Free Churches’ makîng îts appearance by the 1890s.
