My initial thanks must go to Sarah Lewis and Ennis Akpinar of the University of Wales Press for inviting me to contribute a book on castles. Sian Rees and Rick Turner kindly examined my proposed list of castles for inclusion here and made various suggestions to which I heeded. Rick also provided much assistance concerning developments and phasing at Caerphilly. University of Wales Press and I acknowledge the generous support of Cadw, the historic environment service of the Welsh Assembly Government, for providing photographs and plans for this book. Diane Williams and Chris Kenyon assisted with the majority of the illustrations, and I am extremely grateful to them for their assistance, and also my thanks to Pete Lawrence, who produced the figures. Similarly, Penny Icke of the Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Wales provided other illustrations, and I am indebted to her also. Neither organization bears any responsibility for the text. I must also acknowledge the excellent resources of the Library of Amgueddfa Cymru-National Museum Wales, which augmented a not inconsiderable library at home! My main debt is to Bill Zajac who somehow found the time, in an extremely busy year, to read through the preliminary draft of the whole book, and who made several suggestions, as well as corrections. This guide would have been the poorer without his input. Any errors that remain should, of course, be laid firmly at the door of the author.
