Description

The Rare Materials Collection at the National Library, Singapore, contains more than 11,000 items and spans six centuries of history. The collection comprises books, manuscripts, maps, photographs, correspondence, and more, which together provide us with valuable insights into Singapore's history. This book presents a diverse selection of almost 50 of the rarest and most priceless items in the collection, including the Mao Kun Map, a recently-acquired Munshi Abdullah edition of the Sejarah Melayu, 19th century lithographs, Japanese reconnaissance maps, correspondence from Raffles, and even a football rule book in Jawi. Each item is described and analysed with an insightful essay and richly complemented with illustrations, helping to bring these stories from the stacks to life and lead us down new avenues of historical understanding.

Introduction
Collecting, preserving and making accessible Singapore s documentary
and published heritage is a key mission of the National Library. There is
no better expression of this than our Rare Materials Collection.
This first map of Singapore's harbour was borne out of a cartographic survey conducted in 1819 by Captain Daniel Ross, a hydrographer with the British
East India Company s (EIC) Bombay Marine, the India-based naval fleet set up to protect British trading routes in the Far East.
Comprising more than 19,000 items, the Rare Materials Collection includes books,
periodicals, manuscripts, maps, photographs, art prints, handwritten letters, documents,
and other forms of paper ephemera. Some of these artefacts are centuries old and they
represent our nation s patrimony.
For preservation purposes, the items are carefully stored in a climate-controlled
room at the National Library Building in Victoria Street. Those interested in consulting
these items can examine the microfilmed version. For ease of access, many of these have
also been digitised and can be accessed at our BookSG website.
To raise the profile of these artefacts, we published
The Rare Materials Collection:
Selections from the National Library, Singapore
in 2017. It was so well received that we
reprinted it two years later. However, that book only scratched the surface of what we
have at the National Library, hence this follow-up work,
Stories from the Stacks
.
Stories from the Stacks
showcases 48 artefacts from the Rare Materials Collection
as well as a sprinkling of items from our other collections. It is a diverse selection
comprising everything from a 15th-century copper-engraved map of Southeast Asia to
the handwritten manuscripts of contemporary Singaporean writers. All the items are
accompanied by essays written by a team of librarians from the National Library and
invited researchers. These provide a detailed description of each artefact as well as
highlights of its history.
This volume features the oldest artefact in our collection -
Vndecima Asiae Tabvla
.
Printed in Rome in 1478, this European map was based on the ancient
