Whilst the greatest effort has been made to ensure the quality of this text, due to the historical nature of this content, in some rare cases there may be minor issues with legibility. The author has to thank the Directors of the Liberian Chartered and Monrovian Rubber Companies for the information derived from the botanical and zoological collections made by their employes which are now in the national collections at Kew and the British Museum. He has also used in this book a number of interesting photographs taken for the Liberian Development Company by Sir Simeon Stuart, Bart., Mr. T. H. Myring, the Duc de Morny, Mr. J. P.
