Introduction
Tukaram lived in the 17 th century during the time of Shivaji. He was a prominent Varkari Saint and spiritual poet of the Bhakti or devotion tradition. He was a great devotee of Lord Vithal. Vithal is another name for Lord Vishnu. He wrote many Abhangas or devotional songs in Marathi. He is a household name in Maharashtra. His Abhangas are still recited by people. Through his Abhangas he showed the Bhakti Marg. He made no distinction between castes.
Background
River Indrayani flows in Maharashtra. On the banks of river Indrayani, there is a village named Dehu. There lived a devotee of Vithal, Vishwambhar Buwa. Vishwambhar Buwa was one of the ancestors of Tukaram’s family. He was a great devote of Vithal. He always sang Bhajans of Vithal, chanted the name of Vithal. He was a kind hearted man. He would invite the saints and Fakirs to his house and feed them. He would take care of them and get completely lost in the singing of the saints and Fakirs. Looking at his devotion his mother once told him, “Vishwambhar, it is the tradition of our family that your forefathers would worship Lord Vithal. They would take trip to Pandharpur. That is the place of Lord Vithal’s pilgrimage. Visiting the holy place of Pandharpur every year gave us the name of ‘Varkaris’. Why can’t you arrange a trip to Pandharpur after gathering other devotees of Vithal? Continue the tradition of Varkari Panth (Tradition).” Vishwambhar took his mother’s suggestion seriously. He joined the group of Varkaris and completed sixteen rounds of Vari or trip to Pandharpur. One night Lord Vital appeared in his dreams. He said, “I am happy to see your devotion. You are also serving the poor and the needy.
