Description

George Schramm undertook the task of writing his Reminiscences at the advanced age of eighty-five. He was born in Germany in 1816 in the village of Plech, Bavaria, and died in Des Moines, Iowa in 1906 at the age of ninety. He came to America with his parents and eight of his brothers and sisters in 1837, settled in Farmington, Iowa on the Des Moines River in 1845, and moved to the city of Des Moines in 1867. The work speaks for itself. It is a mine of information about the background of the Schramm family, going as far back as the mid-17th century. With an impressive vocabulary, extraordinarily retentive memory, and an interesting style of writing, George Schramm reflected on his past and gave life to the many people and places he encountered, focusing his interests on the early history of Iowa. A good deal of the contents will be of interest to students of European and American history, especially that of Iowa, where Schramm was a pioneer lawmaker, serving the state as a senator and a member of the House of Representatives. The reader should bear in mind the age of the writer and the fact that English was not his mother tongue. George Schramm was an example and inspiration to all who knew him. He was a poet in five languages. He was a true philosopher and a practical theologian. He was a naturalist, delighted by the beautiful world in which he lived. He was loved by his immediate family and his peers, being known as "Father Schramm" to those who recognized him as a pioneer of Iowa and as an early settler of Des Moines. The reader will be both entertained and enlightened and perhaps, be inspired to be a better American and a better human being.

This work was compiled by Carol Staggs Thomason of West Des Moines, Iowa, the great-granddaughter of George Schramm. She is still in possession of the handwritten volumes from which the text is taken, many of the original documents mentioned in the text and other Schramm artifacts.
Several people deserve credit and appreciation for making possible this publication of George Schramm’s Reminiscences. Starting from the very beginning and moving to the present time, these are the individuals to be recognized:
Margaret Schramm Layman was George Schramm’s youngest child. She was the one who recognized the value and importance of documenting her father’s life story. Because of her encouragement and persistence, George, at the age of eighty-six, started his handwritten autobiography in 1901.
Margaret Layman Staggs, Margaret Schramm Layman’s daughter, never knew her grandfather, but she was very proud of his accomplishments. She grew up hearing the fascinating stories from her mother and became familiar with the autobiography. Margaret Staggs knew that George’s story needed to be preserved before it was forgotten. As she grew into adulthood and started her own family, she passed on her hopes and dreams to her daughter, Carol, who kept the story alive. The result is this publication.
George Killen was born in 1897. He was the only son of Schiller C. Schramm, George Schramm’s oldest son. Until 1976, he was an unknown relative to the Des Moines branch of the Schramm family. When he discovered the existence of the four volumes of his great-grandfather’s journals, he, with failing eyesight and at the age of eighty, volunteered to put the journals into a more readable form by typing from the original, fading script.
Heinz Stark lives today in the village of Plech, Germany, from which the Schramm family emigrated in 1837. Over the years, he deservedly earned the reputation of being the town historian and is often called upon to help Americans who have traced their genealogy to Plech but don’t know how to continue their search when they arrive in town. Heinz helps them all. When Heinz saw George Schramm’s manuscript in the year 2000, he immediately appreciated the reminiscences as a great opportunity to spread the story of a family that left his beloved village and became extremely successful Americans. Heinz did extensive research into the experiences of the Schramm family described in the autobiography. Following that research, he wrote The George Schramm Story , which was published in 2006. He came to the United States and presented his work at the Annual Symposium of the Society for German-American Studies in Lancaster, PA, and also at the German Society of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia.
Charles and Margaret Birnstiel of New York City (now in retirement in Warminster, PA) have been invaluable in the process of publishing George Schramm’s Reminiscences . Charles and Margaret, a brother and sister duo, ar
