Description

Rajiv Gandhi was reluctant to enter politics. He was accustomed to a 'high flying' routine as he used to fly aeroplanes in the lofty skies as a pilot. But by quirk of fate he was compelled to occupy the 'cockpit' of Indian politics and steer the destiny of India, where he could reach still higher realms of eminence. Through his dedication and sincerity he hoisted India on the path of progress. He attained the pinnacles of glory in the service of his motherland and brought rare honour and fame to the country. He used to say that he always cherished a dream which he wanted all Indians to cherish with him to make India a land of prosperity and excellence through the dedicated and selfless work of each Indian, in every aspect of life and profession.

When Rajiv Gandhi took the oath of office and secrecy as Prime Minister, a lot of emotions could be seen criss-crossing his face. Despite being silent, his face was a picture of grim determination. It would have been a picture of determination at that time also if Mrs. Indira Gandhi had died a natural death. But, then, the form of determination would have been something else. At that time, his face would have said – “O Mother! I dedicate myself to complete your unfinished tasks. Bless me, Mother! “

MY THOUGHTS
The first Prime Minister of independent India, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, was Mr. Rajiv Gandhi’s maternal grandfather. At the time of Rajiv’s birth, he was in jail. He wrote a letter to Indira that the name of the child should be kept on his maternal grandmother’s name. Then, after some thought, the child was named as Rajiv Ratan Gandhi. The meaning of ‘Rajiv’ is ‘ kamal ’ (lotus) and Rajiv Gandhi’s maternal grandmother’s name was Kamala; and the meaning of Ratan is ‘ Jawahar ’ (jewel). In this way, the grandson of Kamala and Jawaharlal Nehru was given the name of Rajiv Ratan Gandhi.
When Pandit Nehru’s health was falling, this question was raised continuously in the newspapers of that time - “After Nehru, who?” Though, at Indira Gandhi’s time, this question did not arise: The question - “After Indira, who?” never arose. It was commonly thought that after Indira Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi would grace the office of the Prime Minister. But the question that arose after Indira Gandhi’s brutal assassination was - “After Indira, what?” There was no ray of hope about India’s future. There was only a dance of destruction, division, and death. So the question - “After Indira, what?”-cropped up; the meaning of that question was: where is that ray of hope which will take us out from all this and take us on a path of peace and progress?
The biggest danger India facing was from communalism, religious separatism, casteism etc. India’s freedom struggle and the policy after independence had always been one of secularism. But we have to accept the fact that in spite of all this, secularism could never establish its roots in the country as firmly as the government had hoped. This was the reason that there had always been problems with regard to this. Bhindranwale and such other separatist forces were a product of this communalism.
There is another shortcoming in the Indian democracy- and a very big shortcoming - In a democracy there is the ruling party and the opposition. In this way, there are two parties and people having two ideologies. The voters and the citizens are also divided along these two parties. But, at that time, this situation did not obtain in India. Although, in the name of the ruling party, the Congress was there, it had been ruling continuously for the last 37 years except for a short period of 30 months in between. But Congress was also not a party of people with a common ideology. It not only included people from the south, but also communists and people with many different ideologies. The same was the case with the opposition. There were many parties with many ideologies in the opposition and the internal situation of these parties was also like that of the Congress.
Political corruption was eating away at the vitals of India. It had spread very widely in the Congress. This was a very challenging time for modem India. By encouraging morality and ending corruption only could positive results be expected.
Although Rajiv Gandhi did not belong to the Nehru family, yet he had a deep bond with the Nehru family, and the Nehru family was no novice in the matter of running the country. Although Pandit Motilal Nehru had not run a government, he had taken part in the independence struggle. So, he very well knew the process of running a government. He was an eminent bar-at-law. After that, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru had also taken part in the struggle for independence and, in the end, the responsibility of running the country came on his shoulders, which he tried to discharge very ably. After this, Rajiv Gandhi’s mother, Mrs. Indira Gandhi, had to take over the responsibility of running the country. In this way, Rajiv got the art of running the country as an inheritance and he was not a novice in this field.
Rajiv Gandhi was famous for his gentleness, simplicity, contented nature, and good character. Despite spending most of the years of his life in an atmosphere of modernity and western culture, the bad aspects of modernism had not touched him. This was a great aspect of his character and he continued to maintain this greatness even when he was in various high positions.
Rajiv Gandhi was seen as the architect of a new India. The Indians had a lot of hope from him. There is no doubt about the fact that under Rajiv Gandhi’s leadership our country, our independence, our democracy, and our traditions progressed day-by-day. This book provides a glimpse of his great life. Through this book, the readers will be able to see Rajiv Gandhi’s life a little bit from close quarters.

CHILDHOOD

Rajiv Gandhi was born in Mumbai on 20 August 1944. At that time, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru was in prison at Ahmedabad. He was informed immediately about Rajiv’s birth. When Rajiv was in his mother’s womb, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru had said to Indira Gandhi that when the child was born, she should note the exact time of his birth so that his correct horoscope could be made. This was done. Rajiv’s name was kept after his maternal grandmother’s name. Although the meaning of ‘Kamala’ is ‘Goddess Lakshmi’ and the meaning of ‘Rajiv’ is ‘lotus’, at that time it was thought that the child’s name was kept after his maternal grandmother’s name.
Indira Gandhi did whatever she could for her child. She knew that a child needs a mother’s love and care most of all. A mother is a child’s first teacher. Some time after Rajiv’s birth, Indira Gandhi came from Bombay to Prayag. A little while after coming there, Mrs. Gandhi got to know that her father was being taken to the Naini prison. He was going in a police car. Indira Ji wanted to show her son to her father once. So, she took her son and stood on the road in that r
