We have selected 60 sporting lives from the over 540 people active in the sporting realm who feature in the Royal Irish Academy s Dictionary of Irish Biography ( DIB ). Aside from household names such as George Best, Jack Kyle, Christy Ring, Lady Heath, Vincent O Brien, Alex Higgins and Jack Charlton, the volume will also inform readers about less well-known but equally fascinating figures. These include the only Wimbledon tennis finalist ever convicted of murder, New Zealand s most revered rugby captain and an athlete who won nine Olympic medals for the USA.
Certain lives included here are abridged versions of those originally published in the DIB ; in most cases this was to reduce the non-sporting aspects of the biography. Others have been expanded or rewritten to reflect both recently published research and the widespread digitisation of newspapers. Finally, six new entries have been prepared especially for this volume (Brede Arkless, Jack Charlton, Ma Copley, Mollie Gill, Anne O Brien and Molly Seaton) and two existing entries (Elizabeth Le Blond and Dave Gallaher) have been completely rewritten.
First and foremost, subjects eligible for inclusion in this volume must have died. As a result, some of Ireland s most famous sports names such as Roy Keane, Katie Taylor, Brian O Driscoll and Sonia O Sullivan do not feature here. That aside, persons eligible for inclusion also must be born in Ireland with careers in Ireland (like Christy Ring), born in Ireland with careers outside Ireland (like George Best) or born outside Ireland with careers in Ireland (like Jack Charlton). In the last case, the biography focuses on the Irish career, even though the non-Irish career may also be of significance. An exception to our general rule is made for Brede Arkless, who had a non-Irish career but was raised in Ireland and whose birth abroad was entirely fortuitous.
Our selection aims at capturing the different eras and range of sporting experience contained within the DIB . The earliest life dates from the early nineteenth century, with most being concentrated from the late nineteenth to the mid-twentieth century. There are relatively few from the late twentieth century onwards because most sports stars from this era are still alive. The main sports-Gaelic games, soccer, rugby, athletics, horse racing and boxing- are well represented, but so too are minority sports such as croquet, cricket, tennis and hockey. Formerly popular sports such as fox hunting, archery and handball feature, while the presence of Australian Rules Football and baseball highlights the importance of the Irish diaspora. The all-rounder , Kevin O Flanagan, who was a soccer and rugby international, as well as an athlete of note, represents a type that was once common in Irish sporting life.
Thirty per cent of our subjects are women, which provides a positive gender balance bearing in mind how women were discouraged from participating in most sporting activities until relatively recently. With interest in women s sports now on the rise in Ireland, some of the women selected may in time attain a greater prominence as early trailblazers. Perhaps this volume can play a small part in this process. In the light of a surge in research into women s sports history, the editors commissioned five new entries (Brede Arkless, Ma Copley, Mollie Gill, Anne O Brien and Molly Seaton) on women subjects specifically for this volume. The entry on Molly Seaton was only made possible by the publication of new research on her as recently as September 2020. The women featured are referred to by the surname by which they are most commonly known.
We have included lives of organisers, promoters and trainers, such as the world-renowned racehorse trainer Vincent O Brien, the Gaelic Athletic Association s founder Michael Cusack, the prolific golf course designer George Baillie and the much-loved boxing promoter Ma Copley, none of whom engaged physically in sport at an elite level. The same is true for Henry Dunlop and John Fortune Lawrence, who both played pivotal roles in the establishment of sporting infrastructure and competition in Victorian Ireland. Others like Iris Kellett, Jack Charlton, Mollie Gill and Kevin Heffernan enjoyed considerable success as direct participants in sport but were as noteworthy for their careers as trainers or organisers.
Our featured sportswomen and sportsmen were not necessarily chosen for being the best or the most successful at their sport, though there are plenty of those: Jack Dempsey, Kay Mills, Christy Ring, Vincent O Brien, Dave Gallaher, May Hezlet and Martin Sheridan to name but a few. In selecting entries, we aimed primarily to provide readers with material that is informative and enga
