Description

Who writes about their father? Yes, I do, because he was an independent thinker living in an era and area of Holland drenched with Catholicism that had a firm grip on the entire regional society. His remembrance brings up opposing thought: first that of a stern father, the other of an intelligent man with an enormous drive to perform. The combination of these characteristics created a life-long distance between him and the world surrounding him.His life story gives a historic document on a particular time frame in a province of the Netherlands. Please read on to discover how a respected Dutch citizen was driven to perform for the society of his time.It begins with the calm before the ensuing storm of World War II. At the start of the war, this is followed by the war itself, my father's imprisonment by the Germans and return from up north after liberation day. Following are his ensuing efforts to shape the political landscape and society as a whole. Finally, this bundle is looking back on the life of this personality, inter alia, with personal thoughts of his children and grandchild Pam.The significance of this record stems from its sketch of middle-class life in the Dutch province of Limburg during the 20th century in an era yet drenched with Catholicism, respect for authority and one another. The clergy had a say at all levels of society. People were still receptive for views and ideas, hungry for knowledge, and attending meetings in absence of TV. In that respect, an era very different from today's.Read on to find out how that serene scenery dramatically changed on 20 January 1972.

About the Author
The author is the son of the ‘title person’, number 5 in a family with 10 children. As a lad, he just lived his life that changed when he became a schoolboy, going his own way and rather avoiding his father. Every day he could be found on the vast grounds near their house that stemmed from the defence works surrounding Maastricht, where the police was not to be seen and the boys were making fires or could be found in the extensive system of underground casemates. It was the time when spanking a boy’s bottom was still common. The other family members had great fun when one day he disclosed having stuffed his bottom with three pieces of underwear to dampen the pain. Even his dad granted him a smile from the wrong side of his mouth. Once in secondary school, all of that stopped and he even got lessons from his own dad in Biology. At age 18, he started his study at the University of Wageningen. Near the completion of his study, he married his all-time wife, Mieke, who joined him abroad and gave birth to two daughters and a son.
Dedication
In honour of my parents, who started a new and extensive family tree of respected and trustworthy family members.

Author’s Note
Recently, I surprised my family, friends and foes alike with the memories of my life. As a spin-off of that, I realised that I was approaching the age of my father’s death. His remembrance brings up opposing thought: first that of a stern father, the other of an intelligent man with an enormous drive to perform. The combination of these characteristics created a lifelong distance between him and the world surrounding him.
On the other hand, his accomplishments and credentials warrant documenting so that they may live on for his descendants and friends. In addition to that, his life story gives a historic document on a particular time frame in a province of The Netherlands a much larger public may be interested into. Please read on to discover how a respected Dutch citizen was driven to perform for the society of his time.
The subject himself laid the basis for this narrative. Newspaper clippings, internet links, memories and citations from books complete the record.
The first chapters describe the calm before the ensuing storm of World War II. Chapter 3 concerns that war itself, my father’s imprisonment by the Germans and return from up north after liberation day. That chapter continues with his ensuing effort to shape the political landscape and society as a whole. From about 1947 onwards, my father worked on a variety of subjects which are described in separate chapters. Finally, this bundle is looking back on the life of this personality, inter alia, with personal thoughts of his children and grandchild Pam.
The significance of this record stems from its sketch of middle-class life in the Dutch province of Limburg during the 20 th century in an era yet drenched with Catholicism, respect for authority and one another. The clergy had a say at all levels of society. People were still receptive for views and ideas, hungry for knowledge and attending meetings in absence of TV. In that respect, an era very different from today’s.
On 20 January 1972, that serene scene changed dramatically when Pope Paul VI appointed Johannes Gijsen as bishop of Roermond. Most of the Catholic clergy and laity regarded this as a bomb explosion in the renovation process on hand. And the events that followed showed that it was effective in the sense that recent achievements were reversed, and the exodus of clergy and laity from the church began. On one hand, the conservatism took over while a handful of progressive believers continued in the fashion they wished. This situation continues till today. It is tear-jerking!
Youth and Education
HERMANN HEINRICH SCHURE 1 , born 23-06-1906 in The Hague as the son of Hermann Heinrich Adolf Schure and Johanna Elisabeth Maria van Geest living at Alexanderplein 10 in The Hague.
1912-1919: Primary School by the Brothers of the Holy Virgin, Paramaribostraat. As customary then I had to follow seven classes.
1914: My father died. It was a drama of war. He was terrified of having to join the German army and died.
± 1917: Moved to Van Bijlandtstraat 175, The Hague.
1919-1923: Secondary school ‘St Aloysius College’ of the Father’s Jesuits, The Hague. I treasure my memories of this excellent school. Already, at that time, we were made aware of the fact that the RC Church had been changing overtime and did not have to remain as it was before 2 .
15-10-1922: The birthday of my younger sister Zus being a boring event for me, I am diverting my thoughts: Would it be possible for me to complete the last two classes in one year and try for the final examination, in order to skip the next school year? I discussed the possibility with the Director Father J Daniëls. He encouraged me in a way that drove me into a year of very hard studying. Part of the Final Examination could not be taken at school, but required a State-controlled exam to be completed in Arnhem.
Father Daniëls took care of finding me a place to stay. I stayed at the home of the teacher of art, Mr J Maissan, who lived there with wife and daughter Fien on Emmastraat 33. I gave Fien, who was doing class 1 of the HBS, a helping hand with Maths.
Upon completing the remainder tests in The Hague, I passed in all subjects with satisfactory grades.
The first year I joined the Catholic Student Society St Augustinus.
From 1923 to 1924, I was teaching in the first class of the Aloysius-college for 4 hours a week. This resulted in the queer situation that the boys of the higher classes regarded me as one of them.
± 1927: Moved to Voorschoten.
I had interest in studies on medicines and Dutch languages, but for practical reasons opted for Biological Science from 1923 to 1929. 3
The Jesuits showed me the way to the Dr Nuyensclub in The Hague. (Reflecting back, I have become aware of the keen guidance they gave to their pupils.) This club is a gathering of some 70 ‘labourers’ age 18 years plus, and candidate members age 16. Students were appointed as their ‘leader’, labels at that time not yet loaded. In practical terms: on turn one of the leaders was giving a lecture while the others gave guidance. Looking back at this, the leaders learned from this experience as well as their pupils did! I consider it as a worthy social lesson.
The daily De Tijd of 8 January 1927 reports that those who haven’t heard of this Roman Catholic youth club will be ‘revealed’ when reading their publication on the occasion of the third lustrum of this club. It specifies those contributing to it as: C Franke SJ, Dom A Beekman OSB. J A Sleijffers, Father Everardus Molengraaf SSCC. Ir H Thunnissen. Ir G H Edixhoven, F Muller, H Schellart, Ir Rietveldt, F de Grijs, Ir W Muller, H Schure and l Claessens.
In the year 1925, I was invited to apply for teacher at the Catholic Secondary School cum College with Classical Languages in Maastricht. This occurred on account of there being a shortage of teachers for the Catholic as well as Protestant Colleges that had become eligible for state subsidy.
The daily De Tijd publishes on 8 July 1928 the graduation of H H Schure in Biology at Leiden University.
As from 1928, I have been a member of the Catholic Teachers Association St Bonaventura.
With Bernard Vlekke and Piet Janssens, we took it upon ourselves to design the ideal teaching method. The result was published in St Bonaventura.
During a tour on the bike in 1928, I decided to revisit the family Maissan in Arnhem, which had moved to the Dullertstraat 1. Fien had grown up into an impressive eighteen years old. Her dad suggested we make a trip on bike, a proposal we both eagerly jumped at. It did not take us long to spontaneously come together!
In 1928, I became a member of the Maastricht Chess Association. Until 1940, I have been engaging myself with enthusiasm in competitions of all sorts.
On 20 March 1929, I became a Dutch national (staatsblad nr 97).
In the summer of 1929, I felt a pain in my belly, which turned out to be a perforated intestine in combination with peritonitis. The just-graduated surgeon Dr Wishaupt undertook the operation, knowing that the chance of success was minimal. Despite this, I made it and that became his calling card.
The Daily for Limburg (Limburgsch Dagblad) of 8 October 1929 reports Drs H Schure’s appointment as member of the Board of the ‘RK Volksuniversiteit’ (Roman Catholic Public University).
